Perinet - See the Indrie and Other Lemurs

by janiebaxter

Perinet, also called Mantadia-Andasibe, is the place to see the endangered Indrie which is the largest of the Lemurs. The Indries make strange eerie calls and you can hear them for miles in the forest. They live high up in the trees in the rainforest and almost never come down so you need a good zoom lense to get photos through the dense foliage of the rainforest. There are 8 other species of Lemur to see in Perinet, as well as the Indrie. Some people saw an AYE-AYE on an night walk, but we were unlucky with this one. However a really lovely Lemur is the Wooly Lemur which you may see during the day as well as brown lemur, bamboo lemur and mouse lemur. There are many types of chameleons, frogs and the Tenrec which is a bit like a hedgehog with a mohican!2 or 3 days is a good amount of time here so you have a good chance of seeing everything.

Tsingy de Bemaraha on the UNESCO heritage list (1)

by Norali

From the UNESCO website: "Tsingy de Bemaraha Strict Nature Reserve comprises karstic landscapes and limestone uplands cut into impressive 'tsingy' peaks and a 'forest' of limestone needles, the spectacular canyon of the Manambolo river, rolling hills and high peaks. The undisturbed forests, lakes and mangrove swamps are the habitat for rare and endangered lemurs and birds."

Ambohimanga Royal Hill - UNESCO List Heritage (2)

by Norali

From the UNESCO website "The Royal Hill of Ambohimanga consists of a royal city and burial site, and an ensemble of sacred places. It is associated with strong feelings of national identity, and has maintained its spiritual and sacred character both in ritual practice and the popular imagination for the past 500 years. It remains a place of worship to which pilgrims come from Madagascar and elsewhere." Of all Madagascar's UNESCO sites, the Royal Hill of Ambohimanga is the closest to me. Malaza, my village is part of the Ambohimanga Rova municipality, so are several villages around.Around the Royal Hill itself are several spots of interest... and what views! I try to update my Ambohimanga page with activities which can be done around the UNESCO site itself. For instance, a nature park (not fully operational though), hills to climb that grant climbers with terrific views, other historical...

The Rainforests of the Atsinanana- UNESCO list (3)

by Norali

June 27, 2007 - New zealand. To the previous two sites decision was taken to grant Madagascar with its third UNESCO Heritage List site. Add to the Tsingy of Bemaraha & to Ambohimanga Royal Hill, the Rainforests of the Atsinanana. They are wet forests along the Eastern coast of Madagascar. 6 national parks, located along the wet Eastern coast: Marojejy, Masoala, Zahamena, Ranomafana, Andringitra & Andohahela, of which I've only seen one (!), long time ago. From the UNESCO website: "The Rainforests of the Atsinanana comprise six national parks distributed along the eastern part of the island. These relict forests are critically important for maintaining ongoing ecological processes necessary for the survival of Madagascar's unique biodiversity, which reflects the island's geological history. Having completed its separation from all other land masses more than 60 million years ago,...

Betsileo vineyards.. and try Toakagasy, a rotgut

by Norali

Fianarantsoa is LOCALLY known for its wine, Lazan'i Betsileo, Maromby (from Maromby monastery), Soavita. The region was "held" by French missionaires since 19th cent, that makes Fianarantsoa counting more catholic people than other parts of the Island. Vineyards are seen from the Nationale 7. We hadn't done it but it is possible to visit vineyards. To be honest, Malagasy wine is crap ! I think that's the simplest way to qualify it. In the past, the first vintages were correct but then, they started watering down the wine to face the demand. Has been so since decades. Only now there seems to be an interest in restauring quality... only after good and/ or major restaurants are inondated with European, American, Australian, South-American wines. I would be the first to change this remark if they're getting better with this stuff... Am patriot but cannot decently advise you to buy this...

Pereyras nature farm

by tompt

Along the RN2, the road from Tana to Perinet you will pass the Pereyras nature farm. This park is owned by naturalist André Pereyras. The purpose of this farm is breeding the special animals of Madagascar. They have lemurs and many reptiles. First we were taken into the woods, just a short walk, where the lemurs waited for their treats (banana for the brown lemur, and bread fro the sifaka). It was not quit the nature we expected to see, but it was the opportunity to get to know the animals of this island and take some nice pictures. After a lunch we were taken into the cages where we found lots of chameleons, in all sorts and sizes. Again it was a bit like a zoo, but have a look at some of our pics..........A nice introduction to Madagascars animals, but not a can't miss destination. When this is your first visit here, and you haven't seen any animals in the wild do visit. Else just drive...

Nightwalk along Perinet

by tompt

Although the Mantadia-Andasibe NP is closed to the public after dark it is absolutely a must to make a nightwalk with the parks guides. They take you along the road next to the park. But all traffic is expecting people walking there and they drive by very slowly. Much to our surprise we saw many cameleons, in all sizes, sleeping on the branches. But we also saw the orange eyes of nocturnal lemurs in our flashlights. It was an easy walk, no climbing just an even road.

Andasibe

by tompt

When in the national park also visit the village nearby. It is sad to see the village is not profitting from the tourist money coming in. The people living here are poor and the houses they live in are not always waterproof. Still you have to come here and see for yourself. Maybe buy something at a local shop, or have something to eat in La Gare, the old railwaystation.

Big South trip, from Centre to South of Madagascar

by Norali

At least 14 days to enjoy your Big South Journey, from Centre to South! Else, you will miss hidden gems ~as I did during the greatest trip I've ever made. About 1000 km to discover! Amazing road trip ! Landscapes vary from ricefields in plains, ricefields in hillsides, rocky mountains, forests, savannah, canyons, ruiniform rocks, oasis. It would remind you of Asia, South America Andes, Africa in the same region. And the people.. from Merina and Betsileo rice cultivators to silk weavers through Zafimaniry wood carvers, skilled carpenters, Bara zébu cattle owners, Vezo fishermen... and kids, kids everywhere... in the streets, at schools, in villages, in fields... Also, if you travel there in austral winter (june-sep), you'd be lucky to see from afar, or even better, attend winter celebrations (most likely Famadihana In Highlands and circumcisions).See my "Big South Journey, from Centre to...
