Pirogue, the local boat
Well...VT doesn't allow for 'tiny boat' as a Category, so Ship it is. These dugout boats are called pirogues. Some with sails, some ...these were fun to get into. The ones on the picture are actually quite stable.

If you don't want to spend days on rocky roads and you do want to see more than Tana (which is obviously the case), you'd better make use of domestic flights. Fly for instance to Maroantsetra, which has the most amazing airport I've ever seen (picture).

almost to every place of the country you can go by 'taxi brousse' which are cars that are leaving a destination when they are full. And full means really full (e.g. 25 people in the back of a pick-up). But you really have to do this experience when you're in Madagascar, and you will get to know a lot of people, locals and tourists. Also a good tip is to take the train (the only train) from Fiannarantsoa to Manakara. It was the best train trip I've ever done.
POUSSE-POUSSE ('push-push' in English, the Malagasy version of a rickshaw)... The rickshaw drivers could be quite insistent in offering their services. On a number of occasions I found myself being tailed by several of them simultaneously, all calling out -- 'Madame! Madame! Pousse-pousse! Pousse-pousse!'

Travel around the island by TAXI-BROUSSE ('brush taxi')... crowded inside, piled up with luggage (and sometimes extra passengers) outside, but a great way to see the countryside and meet Malagasy people!

This was our transport in and around Antananarivo. came with chauffeur/bodyguard. I saw some car rentals though these beauties were privately owned.
