QUEENS PALACE burned out.
QUEENS PALACE burned out. The Queens Palace that dominates the Antananarivo skyline, built on top of the mountain, was burned out a few years ago. Only the outer walls remain. Such a pity! It is usually named in the travel guides. You can still go and visit it.

— ANTANANARIVO (Reuters) - A mysterious flu-like illness has killed more than 150 people in Madagascar in the last two weeks, the Health Ministry said.
The ministry said in a statement released on Friday that it had sent a team of researchers to villages in the south of the giant Indian Ocean island to identify the disease, which causes a severe headache and chest pains.
According to the statement, 89 people have died in the village of Alakamisy Ambohimaha, 90 miles south of the capital Antananarivo in the last two weeks. Another 64 people have died in Ikongo, 180 miles south of Antananarivo.
The ministry said about 450 people had been diagnosed as suffering from the illness and health officials fear it could spread further.
Most of the people who have died have been unable to reach a hospital or health center, or have relied on traditional herbal remedies that have failed to cure them.
Madagascar has only just emerged from six months of political crisis, which devastated the already shaky economy on the island of 16 million off southeast Africa.

By us, the situation is good. We are all happy ! We are free. Ratsiraka and his supporters have hanged up white flags in Tamatave. According to the TV5 news, Ratsiraka was afraid of the coming to Tamatave the legal army. He did not have any solution apart from escaping. He and his family plus his close left Tamatave yesterday morning around 9 am to the Seychelles for an unknown destination after. All the army who where with Ratsiraka have returned to the normal camp. Tamatave has been liberated from the yoke of Ratsiraka and his supporters. The barriers on the way to Tamatave have been taken out. Like in Diégo-Suarez, the people in Tamatave made a party to celebrate the coming of the legal army there. The foreign ministry of France came to Antananarivo last tuesday. This latter signed with the Malagasy foreign ministry a new cooperation based on many billion of Malagasy franc for the setting up of Madagascar economy. France will give back to Madagascar the foreign resources, as the U.S.A did. Diplomatically then, Ravalomanana has obtained the international recognition. He controls as well now the 6 provinces. All the big titles in the today's news paper say : The crisis is finished Ratsiraka is gone.

There are no compulsory vaccination; an antimalaric preventive treatment with Lariam, to begin 15 days before leaving and to continue till one month after coming back is strongly recommended. In US check even Malarone treatment. It is necessary to take particular care to nourishment, like in all african countries: eat only cooked food, no raw vegetable or fruit not peeled by yourself; drink only bottled water (better with gass) and drinks (check the seal); avoid ice.

do not swim in inland lakes - be careful with inland flights of Air Madagascar (safe, but often overbooked or not flying at all - got stuck for 3 days in Fort Daupin); pickpockets in Antananariov (Central Market);
Avoid to drink water except the one that cames in a CLOSED mineral water bottle. Avoid also drinks with ice, vegetables , etc. At some hotels and restaurants there is no danger. It's up to you to decide...
Clouds of locusts were swarming over Madagascar, destroying crops.....
At times, I found myself in the middle of a cloud. Locusts are really everywhere at such a moment, so if you are scared of insects, you might want to travel around the swarms, in so far as possible.
be conservative when tipping! To much will draw unwanted/excessive attention, and word of mouth does travel.
