Another 64 people have died in Ikongo, 180 miles south of Antananarivo.The ministry said about 450 people had been diagnosed as suffering from the illness and health officials fear it could spread further.Most of the people who have died have been unable to reach a hospital or health center, or have relied on traditional herbal remedies that have failed to cure...

QUEENS PALACE burned out.

by ATLC

QUEENS PALACE burned out. The Queens Palace that dominates the Antananarivo skyline, built on top of the mountain, was burned out a few years ago. Only the outer walls remain. Such a pity! It is usually named in the travel guides. You can still go and visit it.

ZOMA Market abolished

by ATLC

ZOMA Market abolished! One of the most famous attractions of Antananarivo, the huge Zoma market, doesn't exist anymore. The 'central square' still has that part of the market that is in the little stalls but even the locals would not take us there.

Watch ouf for officials in traffic

by ATLC

Your car is likely to be stopped regularly by police officers. Especially if you are Caucasian. They will ask to see your passport and ask for money. We were rather well protected (being guests of a member of the presidential family has advantages), so I don't know what would've happened if we hadn't been. Unfortunately this is a warning without a solution how to act!

sanitary infoThere are no compulsory vaccination; an antimalaric preventive treatment with Lariam, to begin 15 days before leaving and to continue till one month after coming back is strongly recommended. In US check even Malarone treatment. It is necessary to take particular care to nourishment, like in all african countries: eat only cooked food, no raw vegetable or fruit not peeled by yourself; drink only bottled water (better with gass) and drinks (check the seal); avoid ice.

My friend in Tana wrote me (july 7th, 2002) : By us, the situation is good. We are all happy ! We are free. Ratsiraka and his supporters have hanged up white flags in Tamatave. According to the TV5 news, Ratsiraka was afraid of the coming to Tamatave the legal army. He did not have any solution apart from escaping. He and his family plus his close left Tamatave yesterday morning around 9 am to the Seychelles for an unknown destination after. All the army who where with Ratsiraka have returned to the normal camp. Tamatave has been liberated from the yoke of Ratsiraka and his supporters. The barriers on the way to Tamatave have been taken out. Like in Diégo-Suarez, the people in Tamatave made a party to celebrate the coming of the legal army there. The foreign ministry of France came to Antananarivo last tuesday. This latter signed with the Malagasy foreign ministry a new cooperation based...

do not swim in inland lakes - be careful with inland flights of Air Madagascar (safe, but often overbooked or not flying at all - got stuck for 3 days in Fort Daupin); pickpockets in Antananariov (Central Market);

Tipping

by daleduscher

be conservative when tipping! To much will draw unwanted/excessive attention, and word of mouth does travel.
