The restaurant and eating area in Gecko Lodge is one of the best in Cape Maclear. The food taste good, but is a bit expensive for a "backpacker budget". The restaurant close at 9 PM, like most of the restaurants in Cape Maclear. But you can some snacks later.
Favorite Dish: Egg, bacon, toast, beans. This is the best breakfast in Cape Maclear, but costs 1000 MKW, which is more than a full dinner in other compareable restaurants. Coke costs 200 MKW (most expensive in Cape Maclear. Same price as a beer).

The restaurant in Fat Monkeys Lodge was driven by some locals who had their own business. The food could have been better and cheaper. Although the eating area and bar in front of the shore line was very nice. The sunset view is the best I have seen. (see other tip).

Thomas's is a small accommodation, grocery, bar and eating place in Cape Maclear. It's one of the oldest establishment in Cape Maclear. Millers Internet is the neighbor house.
I was there one evening for a meal. The bar was loaded with drunk locals. The food was OK, but I was disturbed all the time by very drunk locals. Thomas's is often written as Thomasses. This is maybe the only eating place in Cape Maclear to close later than 9 PM.
Favorite Dish: Chicken and french fries at the price of 600 MKW, 4 USD.

The Boma is the best and most expensive restaurant in Cape Maclear. The location is right in the middle of the center of Cape Maclear. The restaurant close at 9 PM, like most of the restaurants in Cape Maclear.
Hiccup bar is also located in the same building.
Favorite Dish: Beef with vegetables and mashed potatos. Costs 1100 MKW (8 USD).

In Chembe there are only a few eateries most of them are the restaurants of the tourist lodges but even these don`t have food all the time. Probably Fat Moneys and Chikonde Lodge were the best places in 2004.
The staff of Chikonde Lodge was trying very hard to prepare your meal and satisfy you but you certainly have to be a bit patient - it will take some time. Try the Israeli dish!

Froggies restaurant at Cape Mac Lodge is a fine french restaurant. The restaurant close at 9 PM, but it is possible to speak with the staff and make arrangements later.

Labana restaurant or the funny name "Labana restraunt", as they call themself, is a cheap eating place. It was closed the days when I was there.
