Be careful because there is Bilharzia in lake Niassa especially on the Malawi side. Bilharzia is a disease caused by parasitic worms (Schistosoma) carried by certain types of snails. Schistosoma parasites can penetrate the skin of people swimming or bathing in contaminated waters. Avoid swimming near water vegetation where the snails can live or in slow moving water. Bilharzia can be treated but remember that symptoms can develop even months after exposure
