I didn't experience any crime in Malawi. But the taxi driver told me that petty street crime like pick-pocketing is common in Lilongwe, and robberies are increasing. Break-ins have occurred in residential areas and also hotels. Most crimes involve property.
Security guards with helmets are driving around to protect their rich customers. The photo was taken in a rich neighbourhood in Lilongwe New town. It looks like Police, but they are security guards.

Between the City and Old Town lies a vast park called the Nature Sanctuary which is traversed by the Lilongwe River. It is Lilongwe's Botanical Gardens. Lush trees and even the occasional wildlife can be seen here. However, there have been reports of muggings and stabbings in this area, so do not stroll around here alone or at night.

Near the entrance to Lilongwe Golf Club are always guys waiting for you to make some business. Their main interest is your money! Don´t change your money neither here nor anywhere else in the streets or on the market. Since a couple of years the Malawian Kwacha is free convertible. Change your money at banks or forex bureaus.
Beware of pickpockets on the market and at the bus station!
