There is no public transport to Livingstonia. Neither on the “main road” leading up the plateau from the eastside, nor on the one coming from the west side. The turn off on the Karonga – Mzuzu road is at the village of Chitimba. You have to be there early to catch a lift. Sometimes the last pickup passes by at noon. Expect to pay for the lift.
If you can’t manage to find transport you have to walk. There are several short cuts but to find them you should have a local to guide you. It takes them about 4 hours to walk up the plateau! There is a campsite on the other side of the road near the lake. Another one is about halfway at the turn off to the Manchewe Waterfalls.
The road to the west is a shortcut heading towards Rumphi. It’s in very poor condition and only accessible during the dry season by 4x4 cars. There is hardly any traffic. You will be very lucky to find somebody going that way!
