There is not too much to do in Liwonde. Its the gate to "Liwonde National Park". If you don´t have your own transport (but enough money) this will be the easiest way to get to "Mvuu Camp".
You can enjoy the sunsets, good food and Hippos. (1998)
There are no more Hippos to see at Liwonde. The Shire River has much more water then a couple of years ago. Unfortunatly the Hippos went to other places nowadays.

Hippo View Lodge: Nice but most expensive place

The bus stop in Liwonde is not marked. The important one for tourists is at the military checkpoit near the bridge.
There is a second one in the township.
To get to Mangochi you have to go about 5 km to the road towards Lilongwe and get off at "Mangochi Turn Off".
There are many minibuses going to Mangochi and further to Monkey Bay. These Minibuses are much faster than the Stagecoach ones, but don´t forget they are speeding like a formula one car and thats why their drivers Motto are i.e.: "In god we trust!" or "Inchala!"
Make sure your backpack is inside the minibus or on a good place on the roof.

Hippos can be very aggressiv especially when they´ve got cubs. Its said that more people lose their lifes in Africa by Hippos than by Crocs!
Do not swim in Shire River! Don´t try to touch them if you see some grazing at Kudya Discovery Lodge! If you stay at the campsite be careful at night.
Hippos sometimes attack even dugouts, so if you think about going with locals for a river trip, think twice!
