I went scuba diving, and was absolutely amazed at the variety of fish, and the visibility is excellent.
Also make sure you take a photo of the sunset/sunrise over the lake.
For the things that you get to see. If not scuba diving go jet skiing or even just swimming it is all good fun...... But watch out for those hippos......
Equipment: There are lots of companies along the lake that will provide all necessary equipment for you.

Let's see...well, the country's favorite sport, I would say, has got to be soccer! Everyone either plays it or watches it! Well, women don't seem to play it though. Again, I'm not sure if it is allowed for women to play sports but it may not hurt to ask.
Equipment: If you would like to bring your own soccer gear, you are more than welcome to do so. Otherwise, I believe there is soccer gear available for purchase in the major cities. I don't know where exactly you would go to purchase them, but I'm sure you can find out by just asking around.

Water sports, Hiking, Golf and Horse Riding are the main sport activities in Malawi. They all can be organised thru different travel agencies or you can do it yourself.
Once a year there is the Malawi Yachting Marathon. Its unlike other races where you do circuits; this one is a long continuous sailing.
You can find many links about sportactivities here Malawi Sports Overview
