Visit Kande Beach on Lake Malawi

by Zanzibargirl

The lakeside town of Kande Beach (see my Kande Island pages) has everything. Camping, Dorms, Chateaus on the beach lake, horseriding followed by a bareback ride, snorkelling, swimming, boating, even the opportunity to dive or learn to dive on a padi course. Not only that, but the nearby village has some of the warmest friendliest people in Africa, you get to see just how an African town that operates on under a chief is run (organise a walking tour visiting the hospitals and the schools) and also there are great market stalls.Malawi is the warm heart of Africa and Kande Beach and its people epitomise that. Never have I met more generous and friendly people, and the scenery and relaxation is simply supurb.See my Kande Island Page for more photos.

Meet the villagers

by TracyG

The people of Malawi are world renowned for their friendly nature and the best way to see this is to meet and interact with them for yourselves. The fishing vilages around the lake are particularly great places to visit and see village life at its most colourful.

MISSIONARY GRAVES

by johanl

A couple of 100 metres from the entrance of the Malawi National park, at Cape Maclear, there is a small number of missionary graves, indicating the last resting place of Dr. William Black and some other missionaries. They tried to establish a mission, but in the end all got killed by malaria.

CAPE MACLEAR

Cape Maclear is situated on the southern lake shore. It is about 20 kms from Monkey Bay.It's a great place to do a boattrip. The local guys organise these trips and guide you to the nicest areas.Snorkeling is great, but again be careful with the bilarzia disease !!!!!Very close to Cape Maclear is Lake Malawi national park. You have to pay to get in.While making a boattour, the guys get you in the park through a back entrance and so you can visit the many islands that are around without having to pay the entrance fee, because you dont really visit the park.Teh local guys organise the tour. Ask around because prices can be very different. The average cost of a boattrip is about 50 US for the party and it takes up to 2 hours.Make sure you get to see the fisheagles. It is amazing how they catch the fish with their claws. The boat people usually buy small fishes, throw them in the air and...

Malawi is a paradise for birders. It is very hard to get close to them, but we managed to see several fish eagles.Only got them on digital movie, while they dive to catch a little fish with its claws.

Safari trips are absolutely fantastic! A must!

by Lady-Charisma

Keep in mind now...I was very young (between the age of 5-8) when we lived in Africa, so I am trying to recollect my memories about Malawi. My parents have helped me recall some experiences, although they may not be clear to my own memory. According to my folks, on July 5, 1984, our safari vehicle had to make quite a number of stops because of the animals we encountered. Imagine a huge python (or was it boa constrictor) slithering across the road. Yep, you guessed it...happened to us. Then there was a whole herd of elephants that were crossing the road and we had to wait until the entire herd made it across before we could continue on the road! And have you seen those Indian Jones movies, where they have those rickety bridges with wooden slats missing and a roaring river underneath? Yep, been there, done that too! Now how many people can say that they've experienced all that? Not too...
