Trekking on Mount Mulanje

by travladdict

The scenery on and around Mount Mulanje is absolutely spectacular. It rises majestically out of the surrounding plains and it's easily seen from more than 50 miles away. It's surrounded by tea plantations and small picturesque villages. It's possible to hire a guide/porter to accompany you up the mountain for only a few dollars a day. There are mountain huts to stay in overnight and a trek across the mountain takes 3 to 4 days although shorter trips can be done.

While I was here, we went up to lake malawi and stayed in a very nice youth hostel (sorry, cannot remember the name). It was so beautiful here, although very hot for me! Its a great area for hiking, and you can see over to mosambique -- fantastic view!

Kayaking through the Marine National Park off Cape MaclearHop in a two person kayak with a Malawian guide and start paddling. After an hour or so you'll reach the first of a string of lush, jagged islands popping out of the world's most diverse freshwater environment. Lake Malawi is home to more different species of freshwater fish than any body of water on earth, many of which find their way to owners in the developed world. Snorkeling here is like swimming through the world's largest aquarium, as clouds of neon-bright inch-long fish scatter before you.Up on top, two or three of the islands have super comfy campsites, complete with hammocks, Malawi chairs, decent food, well-stocked bars and warm 'showers' made of reed screens and pierced metal buckets. Days consist of hiking the islands, dodging meter-long monitor lizards, watching fish eagles chase their lunch, snorkeling, reading, and...

Relaxing around Lake Malawi

The clear and warm waters of Lake Malawi provide the traveller with a chance to relax and reflect during their trans-Africa travels. An abundance of colourful fish gives good snokerlling opportunities.

A trip on the lake streamer - MV IlalaA relaxing mode of travel without missing too much on 'Africa'. Local people rely on the Ilala as well, so it is entertaining watching boarding and disembarking, with goats, chickens and grain all part of the affair. 1st class cabins are the best bet and are pretty good value. 3rd class is similar to travelling in a cattle truck.

It is not hard to see. Everywhere in Malawi you will find the BAOBAB. It is not only a beautiful three, but is used to sit out of the sun and protect the house.
