At the end of the day, after a hard day's work, many people will wash up in the river. I would not suggest that a visitor emulate the locals in this habit. There is all manner of disease plying African waters. It is one thing for the local population to use the river to wash up. Likely, they have built up immunities to the various bugs floating the still waters. One of my friends on the trip is a doctor and after a few stories of parasitic diseases carried by critters such liver flukes, hook worms and guinea worms....well, I didn't even trail my hand in the river water as we traveled about by pinasse.
