Like Timbuktu, Mopti has a small airport served by CAM and MAE. Chances are you will stop here on your way to Timbuktu from Bamako or the other way around. Not much of an airport but it serves its purpose and tickets can be bought in town

    Early Plane

  • When you leave Mopti , do it early. The only 2 flights (Mopti-Timbuktu and Mopti-Bamako) Almost always leave EARLY. This has to be the only place where you can miss your flight if you are on time. Both flights only stay on the ground 10 to 15 minutes and there gone. Our flight back to Bamako left 20 minutes early.

The pinnaces of the COMANAV ("Compagnie Malienne de Navigation") carry freight and passengers.

You can take them from Bamako's harbour Koulikoro (Phone at Koulikoro: 26 20 94) and go downstream to Mopti in 3 days (see Phone below), Korioumé in 3 more days (Timbuktu's harbour) and Gao (3 more days). Number of days are indicative. You can also start from one of these cities and go up or downstream. If you go upstream, the trip is longer.

Better to book in advance. But departure is never fixed: the boats generally leave when they are full.

    Fare Mopti-Timbuktu around 20€, Mopti-Gao around 40€ and Mopti-Koulikoro around 25€.

Several things to keep in mind to avoid this boat to become a galley...:
This kind of transportation is tiring and far from being comfortable. You have to be in a reasonably good health.
Carry drinking water enough. 3 liters per day and per person is a bare minimum.
You'll have to bear big differences of temperature: have warm cloths in your luggage.

    Pick Ups to Djenne
    renatob

  • pick ups are the major mean of transport in and out of mopti. There are direct ones for djenne, however if you don t like being crammed in 25 people in the back , with 42C and strong wind(and sand)on your face there are alternatives. You can take a bus direction bamako and be dropped at the carrefour, the roundabout that is about 30km away from djenne and from there you can either hitchike or wait that something will happen.I opted for the pickup and it took us around 9 hours to cover 131km, being stuck twice for a breakdown, in the only spots in all Mali with no trees or any kind of shadow......
The pickup "station" is behind the main campement in the center of mopti and once there ask for the next pickup leaving and you ll be in a sort of waiting list.Once the pick up is full, but really really full, it will depart.

    4x4 to Dagoon Country

  • We hired a vehicle 4x4 with driver to take us IN-country to the bush. 2 hours of road and then 2 hrs. of dirt and we got a flat. No problem we have a spare. DID YOU CHEK THE JACK ? Our's did not work. 2 hours into the bush is not a good place to find out. When leaving for an off road drive, first check the spare. If possible, insist on dual spares (2). Check the jack and tools that the driver has to do minor repairs. And last but not least, MAKE SURE you have a ice box or similar with Plenty of water for that un-expected break down.

Though the world famous mud mosques of Tombouctou and Djenne are much larger, Mopti has a pleasing mud mosque of its own. Unfortunately, for the tourist, the mosque is off-limits to non-muslims. However, it is possible to visit the rooftops of some of the homes in the immediate vicinity of the mosque for a splendid view of Mopti and the grand mosque. An added benefit of such an excursion is the chance to see the interior of a typical family home. A far cry from western homes as these folks cook over open flames, wash without plumbing and have no refrigeration.

One of the pleasures of visiting Africa is to stroll through the markets. Every city and town of consequence has a market. Some of the smaller towns might have market only one or two days a week. A bigger city like Mopti has market every day. Nothing innately ostentatious about the markets, just locals bringing their wares to sell, but the sights, sounds and smells tend to overwhelm a westerner like myself. Something new on view at every stall. Some wares look delightful, others repugnant. But it is all interesting.

A little bit different from say Hamburg's harbor or Seattle's harbor. But this is a working harbor nonetheless. Mopti is the center of commerce for Malian towns that lie on the Niger River and if you are lucky you might see salt slabs from Tombouctou arrive at the harbor.

Mopti bills itself as the "Venice" of Mali. I'm afraid I cannot concur with its self-appointed nomenclature. Mopti is many things, but Venice it is not.

Mopti is a rather bustling port city given its size and location on the Niger River. There are all sort of watercraft plying the river loaded with all manner of goods and passengers. We took a little cruise in a couple pinasses and took in views of Mopti from the river and traveled downstream to a little Bozo fishing village. The Bozo people are fishermen by trade and live many months of the year on the river itself.

A very relaxing, and entertaining, way to end the day in Mopti is to take a cool drink at the Bozo Bar (Fisherman's Bar) on the corner of the port and river. Work your way through the market to the furthest corner where you will find the bar with a warm welcome and cool drink. Because of its location there is always plenty going on to watch in the port and on the river and you get a great view of the sunset.
