Mopti mosque, architecture

by sachara

The grand mosque of Mopti is built in 1933. It looks like it is built in the same Sudanese style in which the mosque of Djenne is built. The mosque has the same wonderful sculptural forms. In reality the mosque is built with bricks with a layer of mud.

Mopti, Grand Mosque

by sachara

When you approach Mopti you see the silhouet of the large mud-brick mosque at your left hand side at the opposite of the water. The mosque is towering over the old city. The mosque is enclosed by the surrounding houses, so you have only a good view of the mosque from some distance.

River Market

by gmg61

The market of Mopti: real Africa. On te banks of the Niger river where its waters melt with a tributary, big blocks of salt are aligned. They have traveled for thousands of Km's to arrive here: from inner Sahara to Timbouctou with camel caravans, and from Timbouctou along the river to Mopti. Close to the blocks, wmen sell smoked fish.

Mopti: three different attitudes

This is a picture I'm very proud of - it summons up the feelings of the local women towards tourists. The front woman says 'Dare take me'The second one says 'Don't you dare'And the third one says 'Pay if you dare'

Mopti women

by chrisvandenbroucke

Mali is one of the poorest countries in the world (I think it's number 5) but you wouldn't believe it when you see the women passing by on the streets. They look well fed, not tiny....but this must be a typical Western opinion

Mopti: the big mosque

by chrisvandenbroucke

Near the mosque we gave a little boy 300 CFA (he wanted 500) for taking us up to the nearest terrace from where we had a good view on the mosque. The money wasn't worth the effort: the sight wasn't terrible.Even the mosque is, compared to many others in Mali not worth a visit. The lower half is not in mud-brick but in concrete....so, skip it and don't waste time and money on it
