Only the essential

Arriving in Nouakchott air maroc losts my luggage. Mouloud lend me some clothes and a sleep bag. So next time I take airplane I'll put 10 kg in my hand luggage and stop, better no give luggage to the air companies. In Milano Malpensa airport (Italy not Africa) they pick up a lot of thiefs among the workers of the airport itself.

Packing List

If you cannot adopt the sandales of the desert people, then have good boots and nothing else. Immediately adopt local clothing and forget the rest. You have to go to the market (best supported by a local) and buy that on place, notably the aoli to cover your head. Less than 9 meters make no sense. Be careful with the sand, the finest I ever saw, like talc powder...criminal for cameras.

One bag. Resisstant for multiples crashes when you travel in desert. Cotton clothes.Long sleeves t-shirts and long trousers. Sandals.Turbant or a hat covering your neck.Sunglasses. Higienic paper. Little wet towels. Sun protector.Mosquito repelent spray.Antidiarreical tablets. Analgesics. Sticking plasters.Bandages.Medical alcohol.Mosquito net It´s quite difficult to re-charge your batteries, so bring the maximum number of batteries with you. you only could re-charge in big cities: Nuakchott, Atar, Nuadhibou. If you take a photographic camera two recommendations:Too many films (it´s rare to find them at shops)and good lens (minimum 150 mm) because it will be useful in case you want to take a picture of persons. Best sites for camping are dunes. Not official sites.Beaches are excellent (although some rubbish in the seashore).

Big satchel if you don´t want to see your bags and luggage broken by the car jumpings. It´s much more confortable for this kind of trips. Cotton, long sleeve garments, sunglasses, something to cover your head (better a turban, if you can), sandals (free your feet from the heat, scorpions are nice). If you are going to the south, near Senegal River (Keur Massene....), vaccination against malaria is obligatory (I did not and nothing happened). Mosquitos are cruel there (the sound is terrible in the wet station (sound like a washing machine). Take as many films as you can as it is very difficult to buy good quality films there. Highly recommended. Stars are wonderful, but nights are fresh in autumn, and cold in winter.

Look after your camera

by eeyan

Take several plastic bags to store your camera in, the sand gets everywhere and the resultant photos a quite scratched. A blower brush and regular cleaning can help avoid the worst.

Forget all the useless stuff we’re surrounded by, but don’t forget sun glasses and suntan lotion.
