Car stuck in sand

by johnsakura

As you can see this place could give hard times to normal 2wd veicules. I made the tracks from Nouadhibou to Nouamghar (El Mamghar) in a Nissan Patrol and some other friends came along in their Peugeot 505. This in the picture was actually the best part for the Peugeot but some other areas were hard and some towing with rope from the Nissan were necessary.

Guides to Nouadhibou

by johnsakura

If comming overland and after you pass these police and costumes control in the picture, you'll need to make almost 60km until you arrive safe in Nouadhibou. The road is very bad and you have a mixture of late begining century spanish road along with sand, exploded cars and garbege together during your trip. There are many people right after the police check that wave at you telling you that you're going the wrong way, or that the way you're going is only for illegal people or illegal merchandise entrance. Don't leasten to those people. The majority are robbers that just want to take some money out of you. They will probably ask you for 100 euros up to 200 to go with you. In the middle of the way can can go out with your money or get together with their frineds and steal everything you have. Many gguides here are actually outlaws, not all of course but you have to be careful. The way to...

First border stop overland

by johnsakura

If comming overland this is the first stop control for checking passports and start giving some money to currupt police officers. Always stay with a smile and enjoy the scenery. This will definitely an adventure if comming for the first time. They will ask you also for some gifts like t-shirts, jeans, sandals, water or even diesel. Don't say you have beer cos that might make a bit problem out of it. If you wish to be well receive next time you come in or out of the country overland, just give them (there are 2 police officers) some t-shirts or sandals. If late you have some kind of problem you can invoque that before you were happy to help them so now they are the ones to help you or something like that.

Border Costumes

by johnsakura

Well...for my experience, these guys just want to live their lives without problems. It might be normal for them to ask you a bit of money if you're comming with veicule. So I think you don't have any other way that paying the money they ask.

Police Border

by johnsakura

This is the police house on the border when you're comming from Morocco (or occupied Western Sahara). Its also normal here for them asking you for some money to get in if you're comming with a car. They know that if you're comming with a car that you have to have some spare money, so they feel very confortable asking for it because they know they will be succeful and that you'll give them what they ask because your main interest is to pass the border right? Either the way there are some ways of passing this problem. Insist on the question of why is necessary to give some money if I do know I don't have to! Tell them that is not right and if carefuly used the word "Harem" which means sin might be strong for a muslim to hear. Second time I got in, the German guy I was with said that and the police officer just gave him the 100 dirham bill back.

Border

This can be one of the first places you think you are going to have problems. Its kind of scaring passing this border for the first time. But don't worry that anyone is not going to harm you. Either the way careful is never to less and It's know by the news that last year a french girl was killed on the neutral space between Morocco (or Western Sahara) and Mauritania. She gave a ride to a Moroccan boy near Dakhla and he killed her and sold her 4wd in Mauritania. She was found dead in the dunes a couple of kilometres from here. Be careful with the person you decide to give a lift. I maybe this way asking for a lift actually and I'm very glad someone gave it to me.

Border opened from 9am to 6pm

by johnsakura

This is the full view of the second border stop before you get in mauritania. Its unbelievable how can police officers live in such conditions. The police building is a wooden house and the costumes is a stone house folowed by a tent. Yhis is on my first way out of the country. The sun was comming. We had to stay in the border fot he night because the border in the Moroccan side only open 9 o'clock in the morning. well a good alternative is to go during the time the border with Morocco is open of course. Its normal for the police in Mauritania side stamping your passport the night before. So as soon as 8:30 comes, you can already start moving 6 kilometres up north to Morocco. This journey is full of land mines all over. You can even notices cars that exploded in the past.
