Kiffa, capital of the Assabe region

by sachara

Coming from the Malinese border and Kayes, driving along sandy tracks for more than two days, it was a big change, when suddenly, just before we entered Kiffa, the smooth asphalt started.Kiffa is the capital of the southern Assabe region and has about 50.000 inhabitants. In Kiffa we saw a lot of other traffic again on the roads, mostly 4 WDs and donkeycharts. The trip from the Malinese border to Kiffa is described at the ''off the beaten path'' tips.

Parc National de Diawling

by Pierangelo

by johnsakura

Bir Moghrein is located on the Northern region of Tiris-Zemmour. This toen is located 360 meters above sea level and to get there it seems you just passed the Moon. Incredible.Heading north to Bir Moghrein is mainly for experiencing the landscape. The landscape in this region of Mauritania called Ghallamane, is dominated by many and enormous guelbs (crater-like depressions) with very old rock formations. To get to Bir Moghrein you have to drive north from Zouerat 440km of desert tracks, mountains and black rocks that makes you think you're in another planet. Bir Moghrein is somthing like a military post and has nothing really to see for the normal tourist. But if you're the normal tourist Mauritania will not be an election country. People are great though, maybe because they are not very used to see tourists. Bir Moghrein is located 600km from Tindouf refugees camp of Polisario Front...

Terjit Oasis

by johnsakura

Terjit is a oasis located in the mountains. This small village is supplied by two sources of water springs, something that is a bit rare in Mauritania. The water just runs down the rock until it gets the floor and forms these amazing pools where one can delight yourself swiming and bathing while the sun is strong in the desert. The rock formation where this spring is located makes it very fresh and calm.

Chinguetti

by johnsakura

Chinguetti is now composed by two parts of the town, the new and the old part. the old part, the western side dates back 700 years. The age has to do with most of old Chinguetti being constructed from stones. The main attraction in the city is the old mosque with its beautifull tower. Chinguetti was one of the most holy cities in Islam ranked, even today, as number 7.world heritage site of UNESCO

Atar

by johnsakura

well, the town is like a ghost town but with people. can you imagine that? Adrar region is a very hot area so the sun is always present. As every single town in Mauritania, the streets are full of sand. Mauritania is the country of sand, once called by french "Le Gran Vide" the big void. On the picture you have the gran bazar in the city centre which is a must while visiting Atar.

Akjoujt

by johnsakura

Akjoujt is just a passage city between NKT and the city of Atar, 80km from Chinguetti.Akjoujt was constructed in 1949, and its now more like a ghost town ever since the copper-mining centre closed in the end of the 80's. It seems the technical spending on the mining was just too much for the amount of copper actually digged.Somehow in 1992 gold was found and a few bunch of australians could actually take a few dozens kilos of it per month until they went away.

Region de l'Inchiri

by johnsakura

This region has nothing much to see besides desert and more desert. You have at least 3 different kinds of desert dunes here, one with white colour and 2 other in ornage but one dark orange and one a bit more lighten. apart from the different types of dunes you can find on this region, you can also find this mountains. This one is on your way to Akjoujt. I made my way to Akjoujt from Nouakchott which belongs to Trarza Region. Nouakchott to Akjoujt is about 256km. Its a long way, and during the day with the extreme heat it may be a bit tough to do. I've done it 4 times, all with car, not public transport.

Nouakchott

by johnsakura

Nouakchott, by far the largest city of Sahara, exhibits all the problems of Mauritania. Some people are rich, but inadequate living conditions and slum are dominating, unlike what is normal to the Muslim world. Nouakchott is one of the Arabic cities having most of "Western" problems.
