The world longest train 2

by johnsakura

The train from Nouadhibou to Choum is the longest train in the world. The iron ore train carry thousands of tons of crusehed rock in a chain of wagons up to three kilometres long. Their schecules and frequencies depend partly on the speed of the extraction at the mines, and on unpredictable hold-ups-damaged rails, enginefailure and even in the past, attacks by Polisario guerillas from over the border in Western Sahara-and travellers should realize that ore is the priority, not passangers.

Region of Dakhlet Nouadhibou

by johnsakura

The Region of Dakhlet Nouadhibou is a region with lots to see. You have the begining of the Bacn D'Arguin National Park, Cape Cabano, Cape Blanc, the amazing monk seals on the coast the Pointe d' l'Opera and Cab Blanc, etc etc

Nouadhibou

by johnsakura

Nouadhibou its the first city after the border with Moroccan occupied Western Sahara. From here arrive by land hundreds of stolen vehicles, man slavering and all kind of goods, even vegetables can be passed illegally at the border. What to say a bout this city...what to say about Mauritania in general... its indeed a different country from whatever you?ve been used to. Its full of poverty, racial conflicts, garbage and worldwide mafia.

Sweet Exotic Sahara

by ummibrahim

The main attraction in Mauritania is spending a few nights in the sahara. There are many "badias" or deserts to chose from. Make sure your guide is very evperienced and please take a decent car out there. We must of help 3 of 4 small cars get out of the sand. It also gets very cold in the desert at night. So bring a sweater or blanket.

Take at choum the night train to nouadhibou. It's a minimum of one thousand meters long train which carries iron from the mines to Nouadhibou and stops at choum .There is only one or two carriages for travellers so getting a seat is hard.If you dno't get it you have two options: get on the iron wagon and try to accomodate or if there are containers ask somebody to open and let you sleep in one which is a much more comfortable option, but then you miss travelling through a desert under starry nights. When will you be able to do this again?

Nouakchott is expensive.and not very interesting .There is a sea shore place which is considered to be Noukchott fish harbour and is interesting to see when the fishermen come back and start selling their load. The beach is a sandy one ,very long and completely lonely but without any trees. It is very easy to get there and not very far fom the city only a few kilometers. If you go down to the Senegal border and stop at Kaedi and don't find anywhere to sleep you can do it at the garage where they let you sleep there for almost nothing .It's where the mauritanians sleep when travelling. It's a huge jaima where you can stretch on the floor you sleeping bag.You sleep with all of them one next to the other .You can meet interesting people if you speak french or a little arabic. If you go north and stop in Atar, take a peugeot 504 to do the trip from Nouakchott to atar. You are packed in the taxi...

When you reach a village, you are immediately surrounded by children asking any kind of question, according to the new sentences of a foreigner language they have just learned. So, you’ll be asked: “what’s your name” thousands of time.Although it could be a little boring, try to be kind; for many of these children you’ll probably be the only “trip abroad”.

Try to hire a boat and sail down the Senegal River.Always take your Mauretanian Sponsor or guard(s) with you.Trip to east to Mali is very hazardous, even with ownvehicle and equipment not advisable, you may dissapear without trace.People are very friendly but extremly poor. Avoid any tripon your own.
