Charming ancient city with an important library.
Fill in yourself with desert, you will not be the same, coming back to civilisation,... but what is civilisation when there everyone likes to meet you and offers you tea.
If you travel though Mauritania, in stead of going by plane, travel by cargotrain or car. It will give you an enormous desert experiance.
Stay inside till you can get out... that is my tip. I traveled a bit but was always more facinated with my hotel room (as horrible as that was)
