Coming from Singapore, I was surprised to see a signboard of Singapore Airlines (perhaps this is their office) in Port Louis, even though the airlines have stopped flying from Singapore to Mauritius.

During the morning and evening traffic jam hours, you can see traffic policemen stationed at the various roundabouts and road junctions leading to Port Louis, controlling the traffic to ensure that the jam do not get worse.

Modernity and archaism

Rue de la Poudrière, Rue de la Corderie, Rue Bourbon, Rue Dauphine, Rue de Entrecataux... no, we are not in Paris but well to Port-Louis, to Mauritius, under the hot sun of the tropicses. The multi-colored crowd that hurries on the sidewalks and on shoed it, the horns of the cars, smoke are there to remind it to us. All this world chatters, shout, challenge himself, made of the business. All can negotiate itself in the street, licit goods or no. But nothing squalid, the character good child of the population, his natural brightness makes that all happens simply.

In the streets close to the Bazaar (the central market) one crosses a whole varied fauna : of the beggars that one would believe took the middle age, the roaming dogs, the men and of women of all colors, of all races (and more again!), of all ages. All Port-Louis collides, jostle himself, parley, sometimes abuse himself, make up in these teeming streets where mingle modernity and archaism.

The old harbor of Port-Louis, the capital, to undergo a radical transformation : rats and rusty cans, eviscerated, in the stink that the heat made with difficulty tolerable, let place at one very pleasant seafront.

One will certainly regret to have offered the place to them "merchants of the temple" but the evolution is all the same real.

These women who choose with attention their apples of love are going to negotiate the price announced by the seller certainly then. The bargaining is a tradition Maurice's, and all commercial act is topic to bargaining. To the bazaar, it will happen very quickly, in kréol. For the fruits and vegetables, the tariffs are the more often indicated on the small placards in wood, but it doesn't prevent to bargain, especially if one buys a more important quantity than to the plain.

For the whole remains, there is not any indication of tariff. The European tourist, will have all interest to raise the ear to hear these bargainings, and so to have an idea of the price proposed to the mauriciens, before inquiring for an article.

Port-Louis is the capital of Mauritius. Capital to the suffocating, populous and loud ambiance.

Business center is seat of the banks and the main enterprises of the country, Port-Louis is also the Government's seat, of the Parliament and the main Judicial Court.
