Built in 1840 this is the only fort left in in good condition in Mauritius. At 240 ft. above sea level, Fort Adelaide, was built over looking Port Louis to guard against invasions.

It is well worth the ride to the top as it has a magnificent view over the City of Port Louis

MUSEE DE LA PHOTOGRAPHIE

Musee de la Photographie

The first pictures on Mauritius have been made in 1840.
In this very interesting private museum there are lots of things to see.
Old so called "daguerreotypes" cameras, thousands of pictures, history and above all, the owner, Mr.Tristan de Bréville, who is a very interesting person.
He runs the museum with very little money and has to struggle each day to survive.
It would be a shame if this very interesting museum would disappear.
So if you around visit and contribute at the same time in order to keep it open.
Entrance fee is 4 Euro per person.

Old Council Road

Old Council Road is one of the few streets in Port Louis where nog traffic is allowed.
Along the road, lots of old buildings can be seen.
The street is paved with cobble stones. Very charming too

Company Gardens

The Company Gardens, are situated close to the Natural History Museum.
At lunchtime, a lot of people gatter to talk and eat.
In the evenings the atmosphere is quite different: the gardens change into a kind of red light district, with prostitues offering their services. BE WARNED

Natural History Museum

This museum is situated in the former headquarters of the French East Indian Company.
The museaum is very old fashioned. At the time we visited it was being renovated.
Collections of stuffed birds, fishes, butterflies, reptiles and shells can be seen.

Caudran Waterfront

The modern shoppingcentre at the waterfront is called Caudan Waterfront complex.
It replaced the old harbourbuildings and is named after a French salesman.
Strolling around, visiting the many modern shops and enjoying a meal in one of the many restaurants is a good way of spending an afternoon.

Main street of Port Louis, Mauritius

You cannot miss the main street in Port Louis because it is located in front of the waterfront area. As the name suggest, this is the biggest street in Port Louis and the tallest commercial buildings are located in the vicinity. The central market and governor's house is also located here.

Post Office Building, Port Louis, Mauritius

The historical post office building is located at the waterfront area and is another famous landmark of the city. The good thing about Port Louis is that it is a small city and all the attractions are located within walking distance of one another.

Waterfront area of Port Louis, Mauritius

The waterfront area has good views of the Port Louis harbour. There are seats whereby you can sit and watch the city life as well as shopping centres for you to buy things. Furthermore, it is close to the busy central market area.
