    Sega

The Sega, traditional music of the island, is at the time born of the slavery. It is a rhythmic and bewitching music to the sound of the ravanne (big flat tambourine in skin of kid), of the triangle and the maravanne (large limps in stem of duck to sugar, full of seed).

The public concerts of Sega always attract an important crowd.

Even though it is not anymore the big feasts 'kiltireles' of the 80's that attracted some spectators by thousand.

Today, Beau-Bassin / Rose-Hill is just another busy town of Mauritius with very few of these luxuriant properties.
However, it takes its charm from being by far the largest residential town of Mauritius inhabited by all races and ethnics, but especially by those of mixed backgrounds, which we can qualify as the true Mauritians. Rose-Hill is full of funny shops, visited by all, especially the young ones, and is probably where the new Mauritius is being nurtured.

Of all feasts that celebrate the Tamils of Mauritius, the Cavadee is the most popular, but also the most spectacular.
The big day crowd, a compact, colorful and gaudy crowd, is going to come with the pilgrims during all day, in a torrid heat, under a sun of lead.

Jamaican reggae settled for good in Mauritius in the early 1980s.
Bob Marley clones abounded among rastafarian followers. Lelou Ménoir is one of the foremost names in Mauritian reggae. His guitarist, Joseph Réginald Topize, known as Kaya, would soon find the key to a sound more specific to the sister islands. Using a subtle compromise, he managed to combine the ternary rhythms of séga and the binary rhythms of reggae to invent seggae. In the later 80s, the Mascarene islanders were seized by wildly enthusiastic about this new style, which created a spontaneous generation of young groups both in Mauritius and Réunion Island. On 14th March 1990, Racitatane was given a 42,000-strong ovation at the Rose Hill stadium, on this island of just over 1.1 million inhabitants. Kaya rode on the crest of the wave, recording two albums, La Paix Universelle in 1991 and Seggae Man in 1992. Quality is the watchword with this excellent group, great songs and high international potential.

Major renovation works started in 1979, financed jointly by the Mauritian and French Governments. The new theatre was inaugurated in 1983, in presence of the French Ambassador. Late Mr Serge Constantin was responsible for stage designing at the Plaza theatre for about half a century until his death in 1998. As such, he has been closely associated with all the major activities which took place in this theatre and was even known as the ‘soul’ of the theatre.
