by canuckmike Since there is a lot of sugar cane in Mauritius there is a lot of rum. You can find it almost anywhere but if you want minis (50ml bottles) the only place I found them was at the airport. The local beer is quite popular here. Phoenix is it's name and is found everywhere. Leave a Comment Theme: Food and Drink

The markets referred to on the trabvelogue pages are great for bargains of all sorts. Dotted across the island are Ralph Lauren shops selling a full range of shirts etc.
Our best purchases were of a good quality pashmina 650 rupees, an excellent quality sari with gold thread for 550 rupees, a hand carved wooden bowl 850 rupees, 4 Ralph Lauren shirts 2000 rupees and one of the ubiquitous small model ships for 500 rupees. Model ship workshop by ZenLady34 You can find many shops in Mauritius which builds and sells model ships. The models are made out of teak or mahogany and are lacked from six to seven times! All the models have been done by actual drawings of boats/ships like Wasa (Sweden). I remember that the biggest ships takes few months to complete. Prices varies according to the size and the model. This shop which we visited is one among the others. As not being an expert on model ships I cant really say if this was a good place to buy a ship for yourself but at least it gives you and idea. They will also pack your shopping carefully. ps.sorry about my lack of knowledge in correct terms...
Price range is wide. The cheapest models could be around 2400Rs. The most expensive one (Wasa, Sweden) I saw was 45.000Rs. Leave a Comment

This shop stocks all kinds of exotic jewelry, which hangs in great loops everywhere. Necklaces of corals, camel bone,shell,carvedwood.....the selection is very good.
Unusual necklaces in camel bone[or cow]that are about $30 Australian. The only knitwear with any imaginationis at the Floreal Knitwear Museum shopping centre. Many of the items sold are from Madagascar. The centre has the nicest coffee shop on the island. Only one person spoke English at this patisserie which had great gateaux.I bought all my souvenirs at CORA shopping centre nearbye which was built for the many French citizens living in that area.I also bought French wine and magazines which were a bargin compared to my hometown prices. I also bought etchings and prints in Grand Baie Shopping Centre that look wondrerful on my wall. Original paintings are very reasonable in that shop next to my favorite dress shop,Out Of Africa.....dont get taken to endless factory outlets because they are a dreary wast of time although it does mean a little extra money for the taxi drivers.if you agreee to go.
Alot more than I expected. Leave a Comment Theme: JewelryAddress: Port Louis and Grand Baie Shopping CentresDirections: Waterfront Complex in St Louis and Shopping Mall at Grand Baie[Waterside]

The Bazar of Rose-Hill by Klod5 Strange and enthralling universe that the one of the Bazaar : colorful, teeming and loud. The merchants challenge you "ziromon, pome d'amur...", the women jostle you in the crowd, bargain some rupees. Everybody is agitated, and the odors delight you (odors of bread, fruits or spices...), or raise you the heart (meats, let's pitch...). Leave a Comment

The merchant of infusions of the central bazar by Klod5 The central market of PORT-Louis, the Bazar, is a passage almost obliged for all tourists in quest of memories (well less dear than in the hotels), anxious of Maurice to loock under an aspect most original. In this Bazaar, not very far from the entry of the Rue Farquhar (that cuts the market in two), this stall (celebrates because in photo in nearly all unfolding or tourist books) proposes all possible and conceivable old wives' remedies.
Always overcrowded the Bazaar of Port-Louis is the place ideal to take some refreshment, to cool off of a delicious " alouda " or to meet some knowledge. It is a marvelous place, sung as well by so many poets mauriciens that foreign (Georges Duhamel or Max-Pol Fouchet). Leave a Comment

The gift shops sell corals, but it is wise not to buy them, because the more we buy them, the more local people bring them out from the ocean. You understand, what I mean.... You can pick them from the beaches by yourself as well. Leave a Comment Theme: Gifts

Remembering our driver (for the day,) had said he had bought his wife a sari for her birthday that week, The Handsome Man politely asked him if he would take us to the shop he had chosen for his wife's gift. He drove us 5 mins around the corner and hey presto - an enormous sari shop with thousands of saris and clothing, shoes & accessories of all colours & sizes. - It looked like a palace to me! Even better, there were alot of local women shopping away happily and although a quality shop, there was non the the pretentiousness of the former place (see other sari tip) and no snooty Madam. The Handsome Man went off in search of CDs (via some crazy streets full of chickens apaprently, but he'd have to write that tip!) and I spent a happy hour or two trying on a variety of saris and two piece skirts and tops. Alot of them were rather too big for me (usual in my world), but they said they could pop me and chosen attire around the corner and have it altered in no time at all for a very reasonable price - Hooray! I chose a deep blue intricately beaded skirt and top, with a pasmina type shawl and some lovely sparkly bangles in packs of ten, to match. We also bought beautiful silk shawls in vibrant colours for our respective Mums. We had some lunch in a rather 1970s style restaurant around the corner, went off and did some more sightseeing and they gave us a call when the alterations were done which allowed us to pick up our goods on our return journey home that afternoon. That's what I call good service! Job done. (sorry, no pic).
"Jupe, Chouridar, Choli, Soiree (another spelling of sari en Francais?), Blouses etc"... There is an extensive range of evening wear, shoes and accesories too. Worth the trip even if you don't buy anything.
