 | Mauritius Things To Do | Tips 1 - 10 of 350 | | Popular Things To Do | Other Things To Do Tips | All Tips (350) This National Park contains several sites which are well worth visiting. There is a new (2002) Visitor Centre in the Black River Valley at the north-west end of the National Park, which has effectively replaced the Le Petrin Information Centre. A new (tarmacked) road leads to the Centre from Grande Rivière Noire on the west coast, 25 km south of Port Louis on the A3. The Visitor Centre should be everyone's first stop on a visit to the National Park; here you should be able to find the latest information about the National Park, and you can also collect a leaflet with a map showing the paths in the Park. Further information about the National Park is available on its website. Leave a Comment

Waterfront restaurants, chic boutiques, resorts, budget hotels, and most memorably - stretches of beautiful beaches - Grand Baie is a little slice of heaven, served up on a typically Mauritian platter. Nestled cozily in the north of the island, the vibe here almost seems to whisper "reee - laxxxx." I loved walking through the little souvenir house enclaves, each avenue opening up to a delightfully secluded stretch of sea. Though it's hugely popular with tourists, you never feel swamped by people at Grand Baie. Actually, that holds true for all of the island itself - the people spread themselves out over all 4 corners, and the laidback sense of unhurriedness always seems to prevail. Another cool thing with Grand Baie are all the little bars, clubs 'n eating joints strewn within walking distance of each other. Mauritius is a notoriously sleepy little island, and wee-hour nightlife as such exists in only a few pockets. This being the prettiest and liveliest of them :) Leave a Comment Directions: North of the island, past Mon Choisy

A nice island just outside Mahébourg. Only accessible with an organized tour. Every hotel knows how to get there. Here you can find few of the world’s rarest birds, including the Mauritius kestrel, can be seen there. You can also discover the extremely rare Pink Pigeon, the Green Gecko Phelsuma and the Aldabra giant tortoise. Also many native trees can be found there, ad a trip is very educating! A very nice vantage point on the north of the island! Some very nice beaches, and some fantastic sight into the deep north, where Round Island is the glooming on the horizon! You can see a stunning landscape from here! Well worth a visit, i can say! You can hire boats there to go to Coin de Mire Island and Round Island. And it should be good snorkelling around there. The only remaining natural forest at Mauritius. The most intresthing is the Macchabée Forest Trail, from here you have beautiful sights in the national parc. At Pétrin, park your car and walk the road (not open to public cars, it is closed with a chain) to the west. After c 3 km there is a junction. On a rock you can read the word Kiosk. A good trail goes left and ends about 2 km later at a beautiful viewpoint. When you take the right trail at the rock, you will eventually reach one of the fenced plots with indigenous trees and plants (keep left). I did not continue there. Leave a Comment

We also didnt visit the gardens but the gardens are known to naturalists throughout the world for their large collection of indigenous and exotic plants, including the giant Victoria Amazonica water lilies and many species of palm trees. The gardens are known to naturalists throughout the world for their large collection of indigenous and exotic plants. The 60-acre garden boasts 500 different species of plants, of which 80 are palms. Of particular interest are the giant water lilies, a spice garden and the Talipot Palms, said to flower every 60 years after which they die. The deers and tortoises are sure to delight the youngsters, whilst an old French mansion, Château Mon Plaisir, and an old sugar mill conjure up pictures of Mauritius’ rich historical past. This is one of the best spots on the island in which to immerse yourself. The water's so crystal-clear and sparkling, it's just enchanting. And depending on the time of the day and the presence of the sun, it's also wont to changing appearances - from azure, to emerald, to turquoise, to that mesmerizing blue-green colour. There's always a nice breeze around, which makes Blue Bay the ideal spot for a little windsurfing and sailing. My friends & I landed up on a Sunday, and it seemed to be a total party atmosphere - Mauritian style, of course :-) Tourists, locals, families with their picnic baskets - making full use of the April weather. While here, also tuck into some of the Mauritian treats on offer at the little wooden shacks all around. Juicy pineapples, fruit bags filled with sugar 'n spice. Or land up with your own keg of beer, and flow along with the Blue Bay vibe. Leave a Comment

The Tamarin(d) Falls (I've heard both ways of saying it) are a spectacular sight. The water falls down a total of seven waterfalls before it reaches the bottom for a drop of 295m. I had my taxi cab drive me to a point near the top and then hired a guide to lead me there. After about 30 minutes of walking we arrived to the top of the first waterfall. We climbed down the side and walked behind the waterfall to the edge of the pool. We swam for a while and the water was beautiful. I could see my feet when tredding water. The water was also nice a warm. Checked out the second waterfall then went back up. You can hike from the Black River Gorges despite what the caretaker might say if you wish to do this. Leave a Comment Directions: Tamarin(d) Falls are in the Plaines Wilhems region.

The road from Grande Case Noyale past Chamarel to Les Marres, Le Petrin, Mare aux Vacoas and Vacoas gives easy access to other parts of the National Park. The Black River Gorges Lookout on the north side of this road gives impressive views of the gorges. Here we saw many exotic White-tailed Tropicbirds, as well as a family of Macaques and many Fruit Bats flying over the trees far below. The Alexander Falls, down a short track to the south of the main road, may also be worth a visit, although we did not see any interesting birds there. Leave a Comment

The island is surrounded by beaches. It doesnt matter to witch part of the island you go: white sandy beaches everywhere. I advise you to make a trip to one of the islands and enjoy the beautiful white sandy beaches and the tranquility. Try to avoid the weekends. It is rather busy as all the locals enjoy the weekends at the sea too. Leave a Comment Directions: Beaches near Grand Baie and Pereybere are beautiful.
