 | Mauritius Warnings or Dangers | Tips 1 - 10 of 29 | | Popular Warnings or Dangers | Other Warnings or Dangers Tips | All Tips (29) When choosing to come to Mauritius I read that the official language is English. This is true for government and such but everyday life is done in French and Creole among other Asian languages. So this is just a warning for you English speakers who are maybe choosing a holiday where they speak English. Mauritius is still a wonderful place to travel to, just bring a French phrasebook you if you don't speak French. Leave a Comment

This is not a warning but for your info: Mauritius is a tropical island and has a tropical weather. The summer, December-April, is hot and humid and a cooler period is from May to November. The cyclone season lasts from December to March. They say that direct hits happen rarely but the cyclone at sea can bring days of stormy rain and wind! We had a cyclone warning on our holiday and we had to stay in for one whole day. The other rainy days we tried to spend driving around and checking the shopping possibilities but as you can see from the photo the roads can be floating and sometimes it is not even possible to use some roads because of the water. Tour operators have to cancel some of their trips like catamaran trips or scuba diving because of the storm. The cyclone did change our plans quite a bit. A traveller just has to adapt this and make new plans, right? Leave a Comment

Along some of the beaches and coast, sea urchins make their home. So watch where you step and you may want to wear some footwear in the water. Leave a Comment

It can rain a lot here so there are chances of flooding. After lots of rain you should check with locals about flooded roads in case you might need to take a different route. Leave a Comment

These women who choose with attention their apples of love are going to negotiate the price announced by the seller certainly then. The bargaining is a tradition Maurice's, and all commercial act is topic to bargaining. To the bazaar, it will happen very quickly, in kréol. For the fruits and vegetables, the tariffs are the more often indicated on the small placards in wood, but it doesn't prevent to bargain, especially if one buys a more important quantity than to the plain. For the whole remains, there is not any indication of tariff. The European tourist, will have all interest to raise the ear to hear these bargainings, and so to have an idea of the price proposed to the mauriciens, before inquiring for an article. 1. I recommend that you change money in the airport immediately on arrival. There are several banks in the hall directly after the luggage hall. For example, there are no banks in Grand Gaube area, which is on the North-West coast. 2. On departure an airport tax of 300 rupees per person is payable. This can only be paid in rupees. 3. You need to re-confirm your return ticket at least 72 hours before departure. 4. Driving in Mauritius: Due to the high import tax on new cars and spare parts, driving on Mauritius can be expensive. . Only super grade leaded petrol is available on Mauritius and all cars use this. It costs slightly less than in Europe. Mauritius uses the British driving system (driving on the left). 5. The local water is relatively clean and the Mauritians drink it. You need therefore have no fear if you use it for cleaning your teeth etc. It is better if visitors boil the water before drinking it or buy bottled water which is freely available in the local shops. 6. Mauritius now has a mobile telephone network which conforms to the international GSM standard. Roaming contracts exist with the UK, France and Germany and Mauritius Telecom is actively working to have contracts with the other countries. If you own one of these telephones why not bring it with you ? Leave a Comment
