Atlantic coast and beaches

by sachara

At the Atlantic coast I visited the area of El Jadida, Agadir and Essaouira.El Jadida is a quiet relaxed town with nice ramparts at the Cite Portuguaise. El Jadida is one of the best-preserved examples of Portuguese military architecture in Morocco. So is Essaouira a nice fortified town with a lively harbour. By the strong coastal winds Essaouira is well-known place for windsurfing. It's a few degrees cooler here than in Agadir. I visited Essaouira in winter, so there were hardly any people at the beach (picture 4&5)Because of the nice Atlantic breeze and the 8km long sandy and clean beach (picture 2) Agadir has developed in a resort with many hotels. Some parts of the beach of Agadir can be very crowded (picture 3). South of Agadir we found nice empty beaches to stroll, even in the high season (picture 1).

Wonderful gorges and wadis

by sachara

The landscape of Morocco is very varied. Besides the mountains and the deserts I like the valleys, gorges and wadis. Especially in the desert areas you travel in the rough and barren landscape like on our way from Tata to Foum Zguid (picture 3). We made a stop and had a spectacular view in a gorge or wadi with steep slopes. Down there were a lot of of palmtrees. Every time it amazes me again to see such a belt of green (picture 1 &2) in contrast with the surrounding landscape.

Such a lot to see, but not enough time

by windcity

If you are arriving by ferry from Spain, Tangier will be your first stop. Most people can't wait to leave, but it has interesting architecture, a colonial history and good transport links to the rest of Morocco. As you only have 3 to 4 days, a trip to Marrakech would use up a lot of the time in travel. However there is a night train that gets you to Marrakech in the early morning. Other places worth a visit and closer to Tangier are Fez & Meknes(cities), Chefchaouene & Tetouan(mountains)and Assila.(beach) What a pity you only have a short time...

The Weather

by Redang

Morocco has different climates, ranging from heat in the desert to cold in the mountains. These sites give you info about the weather in some different places in Morocco:- www.weather.com/common/drilldown/MO.html- weather.yahoo.com/regional/MOXX.htmlHow to transform from Fahrenheit to Celsius? Deduct 32, divide by 9 and multiply by 5.Example: 85 Fahrenheit, minus 32 = 53, divided by 9 = 5,89 by 5 = 29,4 Celsius.

Waiting for hours for the king

by sachara

At lunch time we were urged (or allowed) to stop at a restaurant and wait for the king passing by. A lot of people, families with children were waiting here from early in the morning for the king. We shared our water with some women with little children and walked around a bit before our lunch was served. When we finished lunch, the king was not arrived yet. We got permission again to continue our route westward as fast as possible, because the king has to be at our heels now. nother group foreigners travelling eastward had to wait at this restaurant from early morning and had still to wait till the king really should pass by. On the last part of our way to Agadir we discussed of the king maybe allready was arrived in Agadir by helicopter?

Local markets in villages

by sachara

When we are traveling in the country we like it to visit the local markets, where the villagers bring their local crops and do their shopping. Here we often also buy the delicious fruits of the area.A nice market we visited was the small one in the Anti Atlas, on our way to Tata close to Igherm along the roadside (picture 2). Or the large market in Ouriki Valley south of Marrakech with a lot of cattle and a huge parking lot for donkeys (picture 1). The first market I visited in Morocco was in 1975 in Rissani (picture 3), but also in 2008 the market in Rissani was still very colourful (picture 4). In the same year we spent the weekend in Nkob to visit its large sunday market (picture 5).

Desert and sanddunes

by sachara

There is a lot to see in Morocco in the towns, at the coast, in the mountains. But Morocco is also special because of its location at the edge of the great Sahara. So when you visit Morocco, take your time to visit the desert too.Great sanddunes are near Merzouga, the Erg Chebbi, the highest sanddunes in Morocco, easily to reach from Fez in the north or Ouarzazate in the south. I came here in 1975 for the first time (picture 1). My first encounter with the Sahara. In 2008 I made a cameltrip into the dunes (picture 2-4)South of Zagora you have also sanddunes, first small ones, the Tinfou Dunes (picture 5), but further south near Mhamid there are the huge dunes.

Casablanca - Yes or No

by cabeyp

Casablanca is an industrial business city mainly. The 1 attraction worth seeing is the Grande Mosque. If you have a few hours stop over on a flight by all means take the time to go there but otherwise you can give Casablanca a miss. The romance the name conjurs up for many and the connection to the film is not there.
