Valley of Roses - Morocco

by aussirose

After our 1st night in Ouarzazte on our fantastic desert trip with Sahara Dreams Maroc we headed out on day 2 towards Tinghir. First stop was Lake Ouarzazate and then we drove off road and met some Berber Nomads and had tea with them in their cave home. I a sure you have read all about that in my Day 2 travelogue. We also drove through the Valley of Roses which is where the famous Moroccan Rose Oil comes from. This place was very fertile and seemed to come up from nowhere. One minute we were driving through rocks and dust and the next minute we came up over the hill and were amazed to see these scenes.

Sahara Desert Map showing places we visited

by aussirose

Most of my tips will be in the Off The Beaten Path catagory since our road trip was into the Moroccan outback and Sahara Desert. Here is a map showing the places we visited. Basically our trip went from Marrakech through Ait Ben Haddou, Ouarzazate, Valley du Dades, Tinghir, Back to Boumalne, then cross country to Tazzarine, Valley De Draa, Zagoura, Tamgroute, M'hamid - Sahara - M'hamid and short cut back to Marrakech. So if you are planning a desert trip, this will give you an idea of where you will be going.

For locals only (almost)

by pep2

Tafadna -- by the seaAlong the Atlantic Coast of Morocco, south of Essaouira, you can find som great places -- not (yet) visited very often by tourists. One is Tadfadna, where yu often meet only local fisher-men -- they are present here in the summertime. Tafadna can be reached by bus and grand taxi - but it can be recommendeed to rent a car for visiting places like this. There are a couple of small shops and also couple of small places where you can have grilled fish, if you like. You can rent an apartment for staying in the night -- but it's very (very) simple !

Kenitra

I only stop in Kenitra to see the tropical garden. I don't know if this small city has any other interesting point but the garden is a refreshing brake in any trip.

Asilah

by solopes

Close to Tangier this old city with a wide beach, keeps well visible the signs of Portuguese occupation. With its white houses, Asilah is a good stop.

Ksar Seghir

by solopes

A small village, once occupied by the Portuguese, lost all its importance since then. At least that's what it seems, since I couldn't find it in VT. Meanwhile I will post my notes in Tangier The new database solved the problem, and the city is already in VT, but, as I saw it in my visit to tangier I will leave the tip in Tangier's page as originally.

Alcacer Quibir

by solopes

Following the coast between Tanger and Rabat you will pass a town that, according to Portuguese will, would never exist - Alcacer Quibir. That was the place of our most shaming military defeat, forcing the loss of independence to Spain for 80 years. Fortunately the event is only commemorated with a small and discreet monument. So, if you pass there, remember: you never read me, you know nothing, don't look, it's just a common place with a common old canon.

Khenifra

by traveldave

The village of Khenifra is situated at an altitude of 3,280 feet (1,000 meters) in the western foothills of the Middle Atlas mountains, a range characterized by arid, desert-like regions with red-rock cliffs and mesas. Many of the town's buildings are made from red adobe that blend in with the land.Kenifra was established on the banks of the Oum er-Rbia River at a site which was the traditional wintering headquarters of the Aït Affi, a branch of the Zaian Berber nomads. The town gained some importance when sultan Moulay Ismail established a fort here and built a bridge over the river in 1688. However, since then Khenifra never flourished, although it is an important market center for the region and is a provincial capital. Khenifra is on the main route between Fez and Marrakech. Although many travelers stop here on their way between those two cities for a rest stop and to get something...

Azrou

by traveldave

Located about 55 miles (89 kilometers) south of Fez, Azrou is a small village whose inhabitants are mostly Berbers, and is accordingly one of the most important and famous Berber towns in Morocco. Although small, Azrou is the largest town in the region and attracts people from the surrounding villages to sell their wares in its weekly market, held every Thursday. Azrou is in the Middle Atlas mountains at an elevation of 3,940 feet (1,200 meters), and therefore has a pleasant, cool climate. The surrounding countryside consists of Atlas cedar forests where Barbary apes can sometimes be seen. One of the attractions of the forest is the 800-year-old Cèdre Gouraud. Azrous means "rock" in the local Amazigh language, and was named for the large volcanic rock that is located in the middle of the village (pictured here). The Arabic script that can be seen on the rock translates as "Allah, King,...
