Alnif, centre of fossiles in the Maidir bassin

by sachara

On our way from Nkob to Rissani we made a stop at Alnif, about 100 km from Rissani. Alnif is an oasis town, situated in the heart of the Maidir bassin. After turning of the soil the several prehistoric layers came to the surface. Geologically it is a very interesting area. So the Maidir bassin became the richest place in Morocco to find fossiles of several prehistoric eras. Especially the trilobites, the ancestors of the crabs, are found here.In almost every shop or restaurant in Alnif geological excursions to the local fossil sites are offered. Along the main road fossiles are for sale everywhere. The Imahdi Trilobites Center is the best known place in town. The owner is a geoligist. He also guide people around. We took our lunch downtown and got an good explanation about all the fossiles during our lunch, but we did'n't make an excursion.

Taliouine, centre for saffron

by sachara

Taliouine is a small town between Taroundannt (80km) and Ouarzazate (190km). The town is dominated by the impressive Glaoui kasbah. We saw the kasbas south of the road, but didn't visit it. It's be said that the kasbah is still inhabited by families being descendants of the servants of the Glaoui.Taliouine is known of the production of saffron. It's the principal economic activity in the region. The flowers are collected by hand during the winter. These flowers are used for cooking and as ingredient for some medicines.I only passed through the town two times on my way from the east to the west. There are some auberges and hotels in town. From Taliouine you can make an excursion to the extinct vulcano Yebel Sirua (3300 m high), north east of the town.

Circuit Touristique Rissani

by sachara

South of Rissani you can drive the 21 km long circuit touristique. It's very scenic route in the palmeraie of Rissani (picture 1 & 3). We drove this route with our own hired car. The road is ok, some parts can be bumpy and some parts were unpaved. Coming from the direction of Erfoud you turn right instead of left just before you will reach Rissani (the road is signposted). You can also start the route from the other side, starting fromthe Zawiya Moulay Ali ash-Sharif. You will not only see the palmeraie, but also several ksour (picture 2, 4 & 5). Some are ruins, but many are still inhabited, so you get a glimpse of daily life in the palmeraie and desert. We saw schoolkids walking home, people fetching water just outside the gate of the ksar. From the Ksar Tinrehas you will have nice views. The Ksar Oulad Abdelhalim, built in 1900 fro the elder brother of sultan Moulay Hassan has nice...

High Atlas

by sachara

The High Atlas is a mountain range of 700 KM with summits over 4.000 M. Many travellers pass the High Atlas on the road between Marrakech and Ouarzazate by the Tizi-n-Tichka pass, like I did in 1975. West of this route the mighty high peaks of the Toubkal Massif (4167M) rise up.In 2000 I visited the lovely Ourika Valley, easily to reach in a one to two hours ride south of Marrakech. From the Ourika Valley you can also reach the ski-resort Oukaimeden. In this area I made a donkeyride in 1975.

Tiout

by sachara

Tiout in the south of Morocco, 36 KM south of Taroudannt, has ruins of an impressive kasbah. In 1952 this kasbah is used as decor for the movie Ali Baba and the 40 thieves. In the village itself is not much to see, but it 's nice to walk around, just to feel the atmosphere. The villagers offer their donkeys for a ride in the palmeraie and they can give a lot of explanation. In 2001 we spent a night in the kasbah. It was lovely to sit on the terrace in the evening and have a view at the lights of the village below. For more information see my Tiout page.

Tata

by sachara

Tata is an oasis town in the deep south of Morocco at the edge of the Algerian Sahara. The town is 208 KM south east of Taroudannt. The route to Tata through the Anti Atlas is very scenic.Tata has nice colonaded streets and colourful buildings painted in all kind of pastel shades. We spent the night in Tata in 2001 at the camping in town. We enjoyed to walk in the town, to drink a glass of tea on the central square and to feel the relaxed atmosphere. For more information look at my Tata page.

Foum Zguid

by sachara

Foum Zguid is a really "of the beaten track'' destination 142 KM east of Tata. Only from this side Foum Zguid is reachable by tarred road. From the north , from Tazenakht and the east, from Zagora (120 KM) you need a four wheel drive, because here are only unpaved roads and tracks. To reach Foum Zguid is part of the fun. The routes we took from Tata and to Zagora were very scenic: barren desert mountains, steep wadis, but suddenly green palmeraies too.In 2001 we had lunch in Foum Zguid. At lunch time it was extremely hot in this dusty town, so we looked for a shady place on the colonaded side-walks of the main street.

Anti Atlas

by sachara

The Anti Atlas is the last mountain range before the Sahara. The Jebel al Kest near Tafraoute is 2359M.In 1992 and 2001 I visited and passed the Anti Atlas coming from Agadir. The area around Tafraoute is very scenic with the arid pink and ochre coloured mountains, the scattered Berber villages and the valleys with palmeraies.I also enjoyed the route from Taroudannt to Tata. The road climbs to the Massif of Jebel Aklim and passes striated hills, huge valleys and picturesque villages & small towns on the slopes in a rough, but beautiful setting.

Tazenakht, homeland of the jenif carpets

by sachara

Tazenakht is a town 90 km south of Ouarzazate. The town is known by its carpets. It's also called 'the homeland of the jenif carpets'. Along the streets you see many carpets, mostly orange coloured by safran. Almost all the inhabitants of Tazenakht are involved in the fabrication and decoration of the carpets. When I crossed the town in 2001, just before the king should cross, the whole route through the city was decorated with colourful carpets. For many travellers Tazenakht it is not more than a dusty cross road town which you pass on your way from Ouarzazate to Taroudannt and Agadir. Or from where you can chose to go east in the direction of Agdz in the Draa Valley or to the south to Foum Zguid and Tata.

Paradise Valley close to the Falls of Immouzzer

by sachara

From Agadir we visited Paradise Valley. The Paradise Valley is situated north of Agadir in the foothills of the High Atlas. It's a 1-2 hours drive by car from Agadir on the way to the waterfalls of Immouzer des Ida Outanane (picture 1). The Paradise Valley or Taghrat Ankrim in Amazighe, the local language of the Berbers, is a 7km long green and narrow Valley along the Ankrim river. In the sixties this valley was a popular gathering place of the hippies from abroad. They live here ´in paradise´ and cultivated the ground. Nowadays you can still see the date palms and cultivated grounds with fruit trees like olive, figs, bananas and oranges. After the hippies abandoned the area some locals took over. The Paradise Valley is signposted from the road. Look for the sign with ´Taghrat, Vallée du Paradis, sentier pédestre´ (footpath). Youngsters are waiting there offering to guide you around. At...
