Pimp yo mouth in Morocco, get a tat

by JamalMorelli

I include getting silver teeth under the off-the-beaten path category - it's not going to be my most popular suggestion on what to do in Morocco. Thanking God for my ample share of bad-ass is the primary step. Step two is flying my colors - and the ease of getting a silver tooth (no, my tooth wasn't knocked out - and neither were most of these Riffian cats)The old woman in the photo had explained the connection between dangerous Riffi men and silver teeth. I got it. It was fast and painful and the dentist shaved my tooth to fit the silver case over it. Moroccans seem to dig it. My American and English friends wonder what happened to my tooth. The male berber tattoos are known both here and in the States as a sign you may have been in prison. (Women's tattooes are something else) The man who had this tattoo felt it singled him out as Riffian - a point of incredible pride and distinction...

Morocco - Country of Magic...and witchcraft

by JamalMorelli

Though Islam throws a wide net for activities that can be labelled as that of the 'mooshirkeen' or 'those who partner with God' sorcerery, witchcraft, consulting of spiritual healers is fairly common - it's just a matter of asking the right people. Most people will avoid direct questioning if they have been involved with anything that can be interpreted as withcraft, but if they trust you, you will learn of another Morocco - a Morocco that has an unbroken tradition of powerful magicians that goes back over a thousand years... Ramadan Bliss - Don't Miss It...

by JamalMorelli

If you are Muslim, this is so on the beaten path that I'll just say excuse me now. However, if you aren't you are probably (based on common travel thread questions on Ramadan) filled with ideas about Ramadan being a time that you won't be eating or drinking, fun stops, a time of incredible austerity, no one is open and the majority of the people are in violent and foul moods. This is generally so wrong that it resembles willful obscuring rather than naivety or honest reporting. But in case you really don't know - Ramadan is a incredibly happy time in Morocco... just on the heels of a season of marriage and the wild spiritual energy of the month of Sha'aban, Ramadan asks Muslims to avoid eating and drinking from dawn till dusk for one lunar month. The fasting includes poor behavior, foul language, smoking, cruelty, etc. And then after a day of cleaning one's self out is a night of...

Driving in the Mountains

by JamalMorelli

It is so, so beautiful - but the drivers (and periodically the roads) up there can be both terrifying and lethal. The drive itself scares some of my friends, even though I would put it up there with the world's wonders. I have a friend who justs pops some weird dramamine/valium combo to calm the car sickness he experiences. (He does that so he can enjoy the spectacular views.) If it is your first time there: Do not drive at night. Period. Summary: I would not miss it for anything. VTer Angiebabe is this particular activity's biggest proponent. Ask her about and watch the poetry flow. Drive super safe, beware of dumb*sses disguised as grand taxis, pick up something for the carsickness at a pharmacy (if it's really a big problem for you) and dive in.UPDATE: Night after every other night, there are overturned buses on Moroccan TV - be supercareful up there; don't drive like me.See also...

High Atlas to Marrakesh

by frlove

If you travel inland towards the Atlas Mountains you are rewarded with the scenery you hoped for. There is a well traveled and paved road from Marrakesh to the Atlas. Along the way we saw a number of commercial ventures ( buses, tour guides) leading small groups into the Mountains. So even your everyday traveler has the chance to get back to the real North Africa. The red rocks in these pictures are part of the real Africa, from the Triassic. The rocks are red as they are from the earliest age of the dinosaurs and deposited in a non-marine enviroment, meaning where the dino's walked rather than went for a swim. You willl see plenty of fossil shops along the road but..Beware..many of these "fossils" are nicely carved rocks. But if you look closely and pay a little more you will find some great fossils for the fireplace mantle. Did not see T-Rex as he was hanging out in Jurassic Park

The Atlantic coast

by DanielF

Touring the Atlantic coast of Morocco from Tangier to the (inexisting) border with the Western Sahara was a memorable and romantic trip. We visited lovely old towns like Asilah, El Jadida, Essawira and Safi. The road was almost always empty and past over wild sandy beaches where, unfortunately bathing was dangerous and only a few surfers dared into the water. One of the most memorable stops in our road was the visit to the small bach town of Walidia (pictured here). There, we visited an oyster farm where they also sold their products to visitors. We had to bring our own lemons, salt and Moroccan white wine and the chairs were made of plastic. But the oysters were so delicious...

The Granary in Meknes

by Paul2001

One of the more impressive attractions in Meknes is the huge granary that is located east of the Old City. During medieval times the granary was used by Royal Family to store grain. The place is a labyrinth of large rooms, some as large as a gymnasium. Many of the rooms are covered with vegetation which gives them an eary feel. Some are also very dark. It is my understanding that the granary is presently undergoing restoration.

Get OUT of the HOTEL poo!

by JeSuisJill

I just try to "experience" a place that I visit. I don't traditionally stay in a swanky hotel, I don't seek out the 5 star restaurants or discos. I look for the SOUL and history of a place. Anyway, these photos are self explanatory.

Erg Chebbi and other dune locations

by Bali-Babe

Erg Chebbi has the largest dunes in Morocco, and is an unbelievable place to visit. Although it can be a bit more touristy than other dune locations, you will find peace and quiet amongst the dunes. To get to Erg Chebbi, depart from the town of Merzouga, which is south of the town of Erfoud.Camel treks can be arranged from most of the hotels in the town of Merzouga. Make sure you bring a roll of toilet paper with you when venturing out into the dunes....and more blankets and warm clothes than you would imagine. Also, pick up a few bottles of wine before you venture out of Merzouga. It's nice to sit among the fire with the grape, and helps you sleep better in the tent. You can also visit some of the other dune sites such as Erg Lihoudi and Erg Chigaga. Both of these destinations would be many hours west of Merzouga by car, then by camel. Both sites have camp locations that you can stay at....
