Salt works

by JLBG

In the foreground, cultivated fields are on a kind of low plateau, while in the middle. The lagoon has been transformed into salt works (pinkish). In the background, a small peninsula protects the salt works from the ocean, further behind.

Green houses

by JLBG

More and more often, these little fields are covered with green houses, which allows early crops (mostly tomato growing) for export. A few years ago, there were only a few green houses. Now they are very frequent.

Fields or gardens ?

by JLBG

A little northern, a stripe of fertile land sits between the ocean and the plateau where the road runs. Are they fields or gardens ? Difficult to say, but they grow tomatoes, onions, carrots, which all grow very well, and are either for home use of for export.

No shelter, brakers

by JLBG

As soon as there is no more shelter, waves break violently on the shore again. The sight is always magnificent but bathers will be disappointed. On the whole, the west coast of Morocco, on the Atlantic Ocean, has only few beaches but some are superb.

Sheltered bay

by JLBG

When the coastline is not so straight, tracing a bay, that provides some shelter and the ocean does not brake so violently than in other places. Sometimes, there can be a beach in the most sheltered part of the bay.

Donkey and ocean

by JLBG

Another fastened donkey is grazing alone in front of the superb ocean. Donkeys are used by the fellahs (peasants) to perform a lot of tasks. When the go to the market, they are loaded with what will be sold or what have been bought and often, the owner seats on top of the whole ! They also carry impressive loads of hay or of wood. Sometimes, they are hitched up to a small carriage.

Marabout and palm trees

by JLBG

The land is poor, there is not much growing. The people are poor too. This is one of the few places where, this year, children came running fast to ask for money. You can see two of them on the left of the picture. A few years ago, it was much more often and was a real problem to shoot a picture of the landscape? One had to hurry up !

Ocean waves braking on the shore

by JLBG

Like on most parts of this coast, the shore is rugged and not very welcoming. However, if the shore cannot be called "beach", the ocean is very rich in fishes and sometime, you can see anglers with very long rods that are high on the cliffs and fish in the ocean underneath.

Donkey and youngster

by JLBG

This picture was easier to shoot than the one with camels as donkeys are usually fastened on a rope and cannot escape. Actually, the mother only is fastened, but her young will not leave her and will stay by her side !

Camels and ocean

by JLBG

I wanted to take this picture of a female camel with her young but if I had walked towards them, they would have gone away. I was driving and choose to drive to the left side of the road, that would allow to get very close to them : usually animals are afraid of humans walking but not by a car. That worked !
