Imilchil Things to Do

Historically there has for a long time been an annual marriage festival here in Imilchil where women and men in the area looking for a marriage partner can meet together, the women can size up the men and do the choosing and approaching with their interest!

On the 2nd day a government official then arrives to make official the forthcoming marriage of couples who would like to get married - gives them a certificate and apparently a gift of money from the government.

This all becomes a celebration with traditional Berber music led by a Berber master with men making music and women singing.

This has usually happened at a venue 20 km out of town in an area that for the 3 days becomes one of Morocco's largest souks - traders come from all over Morocco with their wares - mobile shops and stalls of all sorts of items and theres usually a huge horse and donkey market.
Locals take the opportunity to sell their crafts such as sought after woollen blankets and capes in the traditional Ait Haddidou tribe style of the area.
Buyers and sellers move into to stay for the period, many food stalls are set up to feed everyone for the duration and the area becomes the size of a small town.

This truly makes a fascinating and very photogenic venue to spend some time. and if you are looking for traditional Moroccan and Berber items this is a good opportunity to practice your haggling skills. Remember though that when buying off a local woman the money you give her supports her family to help through the year in an area that is very seasonal in earning opportunities.
The people here are poorer and it is more difficult to earn what people would earn when living in the cities. and it is much more difficult to be in a position to allow their children to leave home to for example go to university in another part of the country - which is free in Morocco but has a lot of associated costs.
So my recommendation is haggle with dealers but be happy to pay the asking price for hand made items for sale by local women and men.

I first stayed in Imilchil for the marriage festival in 2004 (camped at Lake Tislit), then again in 2011 and last year in 2012 (staying at Auberge Tamdert).
Last year the men and women met each other in another venue - apparently at a private location right in Imilchil. In the afternoons out at the souk excellent Berber entertainment was put on from late afternoon for a couple of hours each day.
Then in the evenings as per previous years, Berber concerts are on each night right in the centre of Imilchil - very popular with the local community and many people turn up for these.

Clothing/Shoes/Weather Gear: can get cold - cold in winter of course and can be cold at night even in summer.

Photo Equipment: the area is so photogenic! but fairly remote - bring plenty of film or digital storage, make sure your batteries dont go dead at the worst time,

Camping/Beach/Outdoor Gear: we camped once beside the lovely lake a few kilometres out of imilchil so bring camping gear if you are wanting to camp and anything that would make being in such a romantic spot memorable. bring your swimmers if you want to go for a splash - sunrise is not a bad time for such.

Imilchil Off The Beaten Path

The famous fastival in Morocco is this festival of engagement and weddings especialy in the village of Ait amer about 20 km far from Imilchil . now it's mixed with the second festival who is called : festival of top music mountains in imilchil : "festival de musique des cimes " they are usualy happened in the last week of august In imilchil not very far from the lakes of Isli and more intersting to be discovered . There are 4 ways to get to Imilchil, not all are hard.

The one from the south from Tinghir and Ouarzazat is described in the Tineghir section about 120 km . from Ait hani to Agdal it's not very good . but the views are very nice especially on the top of Tigherghizine ; and the villages of Agdal ; Timariine and Akdim

The one from Fes or Errachidia , goes through Midelt and Rich. From Rich the way is wonderfull you go by Amouguer ; Outerbate, Bou ouzmou and a wonderful trip, doable in all the year in a small bus , 4*4 and other means of transport available. many hotels in imilchil " complexe collier d' ambre imilchil " and in Rich, both cheap and some of them basic but clean .

From the North last big towns on paved road are Beni mellal , Kasba Tadla, and Elksiba. between Khenifra and Beni Mellal there is two ways to go there : first is via Elksiba and the second is from Sidi yahya oussaad and Aghbala . The paved road takes you up to Ait sidi hssin . From there its not hard, and complexe collier d' ambre Imilchil is a good place to spend the night in Imilchil .

Other one is from Midelt by circuits of Jafar by 4*4 or from Tounfit and Boumia and throught the villages of : Anemzi , Aouddim , Anefgou this way is new and the andescape is beautifull .

Favorite thing: Getting around in this mountainous region involves bringing enough cash for food and transport ( not more expensive than in the rest of Morocco) there is no bank but there is many post offices . and knowing when Market days are( Imilchil : friday and saturday , Bououzmou :thuasday , Outerbat : sunday) but you can find all things that you want especially in Imilchil because there is many shops and factories to buy food and other necessaries . On market days it's always easier to find transport on a lorry. but there is some taxies and commun transport to go to Rich and Aghbala ( wendesday ; day of the market ) Lorries and taxies and some private cars are most used form of transport, after the donkey and mules of course.
Here are a many important towns in the region with their respective market days.well known by thier architecture and good views ; this comment is gived by mohamed daamti guide from imilchil : and manager of the : complexe collier d' ambre imilchil . for other informations contact me to this numbers : 00212(0)63683485 or 00212(0)72992679 or my emails : m_daamti@hotmail.com or trainingmed1@gmail.com

Fondest memory: i am living in imilchil and know every thing about it
