Me at Laayoune by barryg23 Laayoune is an excellent value restaurant where for less than 5 euro you can have an excellent 3-course meal and a drink. I didn't think it would be physically possible to have another 3 course meal after all I had eaten in Les Alizes the previous night but the menu was very tempting. The harira and bread is a meal in itself while the tagine I had for main course was the best of the trip. We were the only diners here at first but by the end of our meal the place was packed and there was a queue outside.
The Vegetable tagine I ate here was the nicest tagine I tasted all week. Absolutely delicious and you can get it on the 48 DH menu. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: less than US$10 » Currency ConverterComparison: less expensive than average

Ruth outside Les Alizes by barryg23 We had out nicest meal of the entire trip in this fantastic restaurant. Les Alizes is hidden away down Rue de la Skala but it's definitely worth searching for. The 3-course set menu for 85 DH is a very good deal and they also serve wine from 95 DH. The service was excellent and the place was packed. We were the only English speakers there, though there were no locals here; the rest were all French tourists (a good sign I guess). The people next to us had pre-ordered a pastilla (Moroccan speciality) and it looked great - I was so tempted to ask them for a bite. Two 3-course meals, a bottle of wine and mint-tea for two came to 280 DH (28 Euro) - more expensive than your average essaouira restaurant but well worth it.
Harira, Brochettes and Yaourt de Maison for me. Harira, Couscous aux Sept Legumes and Fruit salad for Ruth. Leave a Comment Theme: LocalPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: more expensive than averageAddress: 26 Rue de la SkalaPhone: 044 476819Directions: Next door to Hotel Smara

After an hour or so doing deals in one of the gallery shops we asked the advice of the artist owner for good restaurants with recommended menus for local cuisine and with good value for money ie we'd already spent too much money with him and had to watch our wallets! He gave us a couple of recommendations but particularly this one the Beldy Restaurant which actually was only just around the corner from Hotel Cap Sim where we'd left our luggage. The place had plenty of character and class but casual with moroccan furnishings using the long continuous sofa along the wall and cushions but with chairs with character around the tables, pottery dishes that you usually see from Safi or Sale to serve olives and spices. With a clean look stonework around the whole place.
We were both happy with the selection of dishes to choose from and my friend was happy with the price on her tight budget. Average 55 dirham for single but large serve tagine and couscous dishes with really spiced up choice of ingredients such as chicken with apricots and chickpeas etc. She chose a couscous dish that really was delicious - my kind friend is always happy to let me have a taste test! and i had a very nice Salade Morocaine with olives and bread for 15 dirham (and unfortunately the harira for 15 dirham didnt arrive as i think the host accidentally missed it from our order!) but not to worry it was all good value and fairly quick with the dishes arriving in about 15 minutes. I found myself being enticed into one of these fish grill restaurants. The days catch is on display, so select your choice, then sit at one of the benches, where your meal is spread out on the plastic table covering. The fish grills face onto a gardened area, and it's a good place for people watching! During my meal, a few Berber musicians entertained us with a couple of songs, before another group took their place. A nice relaxing lunchtime experience! You can purchase freshly caught fish from the nearby boats/ fish market, and the stall holders will cook your fish for you!
I had 8 sardines, with lemon quarters, salad (tomatoes, lettuce, peppers and onion), fresh bread and a fanta for 16dh! bargain! The sardines were delicious! Located inside the beautiful blue-coloured medina, in one of the small white houses, is this incredibly trendy and though inexpensive restaurant. Owned by Hasan, a young moroccan with an European girlfriend, it has moroccan decoration in the chill-out style, candlelights and fantastic music and environment. Colour ranges between black, red and orange, a magic small world, with very good moroccan cuisine, cooked with elegance and served with class by Hasan himself, who doesn't miss the opportuinty to chat with his clients or sip a glass of moroccan wine with them. Ideal for young independent travellers or trendy and open-minded families. Nice Story: on our first night in Essaouira, we were lost and without hostel, and Hasam took us with him to his house to spend the night, 5 minutes after we entered his restaurant to ask for help.. we were 9 people on his couches and on the next day, of course, had dinner in his nice restaurant!
I only ate there once, but it was a very good "Veal Tagine" (stew) Leave a Comment Theme: DinerPrice: US$11-20 » Currency ConverterComparison: about averageAddress: Rue Iben RochedPhone: 00212044472139Directions: inside the Medina, not far from central square (5 minute-walk)

RESTAURANT BAB LAACHOUR by matcrazy1 This two-story white restaurant with sunny terasse and tables with umbrellas put outside on the ground offers delicious local food (fish, chicken and royal coscous) but especially seafood. All at average price, higher than in poor local restaurants but lower than in other, more touristy places. Additionally it's a good place to watch walking locals and visitors.
I had a seafood plate (oysters, spider crabs, schrimps, fish) and Moroccan seasonal salad. It was fresh and delicious meal and one portion was enough for two. Restaurant les Alizes is a charming little place run by a husband and wife. The DH85 set menu includes the best tajines I tasted anywhere in Morocco. Wine is served. This place fills up soon after the doors open, mostly with French couples, so it is advisable to make a reservation. Cafe Mermoz is a nice, small restaurant in the centre of Essaouira. The lunch menu was especially good value: you can choose main courses from as little as 25 DH while the set menus start at 50 DH. Two 3-course meals plus water cost us 140 DH (14 Euro). While the quality was not as high nor the price as low as at Laayoune (previous tip), I'd still recommend it. Having been open just a short time Essaouira's latest eatery is causing big waves, “La Cantina” is a Mexican(ish) Bistro that also serves Vegetarian dishes, English Tea and superb Cakes. The brainchild of Sharon & Steve was to turn what was once a dusty antique shop into a meeting place for locals, expats and tourists alike. If you have had just one tajine to many this great place offers welcome relief with an extensive and nutritious menu, 50% of which is vegetarian. La Cantina can easily be found at 66 Rue Boutouil, in a cosy square at the top of Ave sidi Med ben Abdellah. .. Open from 11am to 8 pm

Interior of El Patio by DesertStar It was very romantic, and the food was wonderful. You wouldn't want to be in a rush in this restaurant, but I can't imagine why anyone would be. The menu was presented on an enormous blackboard almost as big as our waitress. The wine was wonderful and we really made a night of it. Our bill, including quite a lot of wine, a shared sherbet and the tip, was 550dh, about $70.00 Canadian. One of our splashes on the trip.
I had two appetizers instead of an entree -- croustades de chevre (a bit too much raw garlic in them for my taste, but they really were wonderfulful apart from that) and sensational calamare aioli, which was mellow and delicious.
