  • Overpriced! We spect €1000 on what elsewhere cost €450!! The fish assorment grill was uneatable. The tagines only average. Avoid this place.

Its dark and dingey and oh and by the way the cosy discrete nooks small of damp!

    The bottled water!!!

  • Just before you enter the harbour are some outdoor fish grills in wooden sheds. Well worth a visit and Many different selections of the day's catch on view.

Sorry no photos of the shed.

Myself and few other travellers got a good deal for about 80dirham consisting of king prawns, small prawns, scampi, calarmari and big fish of somekind plus salad & bread.

  • Great little restaurant with seating indoors and outside.

we found this restaurant, run by what seems to a husband and wife pair, just off one of the main shopping streets. there was nobody there when we got there but it was early in the evening. we were warmly welcomed by the female patron, who is also the chef, who was able to produce a menu in english for us and explain all the dishes.

the menu was small but offered a good variety- fish tagine, john dory fillet, beef brioates (beef and courgette wrapped in filo - really delicious), homemade pasta with a variety of sauce- the dishes we tried were all really good - so good in fact we ended up ordering desert - chocolate tart and plum with almond tart, both really exceptional! total cost was about £24 for 4 of us having a 1.5l water,2 cokes, 2 starters, 4 mains, 2 desserts, and a coffee. perfect portion sizes as well, we were all pleasantly full.

we were served by the male patron, an extremely pleasant man who spoke very good english, french, german and probably several other languages and both he and his wife was very friendly and chatted with us.

    the restaurant also has wifi!

the restaurant soon filled up shortly after we ordered- cant say we were surprised , a really delicious dinner with lots of variety, with great service and all for a bargain price.

any of the puddings - really hit the spot and lovely big portions......mmmmmm

The open air grilled seafood stalls are pretty much of a tourist institution, and are now at the end of the square into which Place Moulay El Hassan opens.
A row of identical blue-and-white shacks displaying the wet fish and competing for your custom, choose the fish you want and it's weighed, grilled for you and served up with bread and salad. Simple.

Never less than good, and on occasion superb. I had a plate of grilled prawns there that was one of the best things I've ever eaten, simply grilled to exactly the right degree, squeeze of lemon. But I went back the next day, asked for the same & and just got boiled prawns. Very good, but not sublime. Teach me to be greedy.

We sat outside and watched the post-sunset crowd drift by. Quite large gaps between courses, but we weren't in a hurry, and the cats who soon found us kept us entertained. We had a very tasty meal of soup, chicken tagine, chicken couscous, dessert, and bottled water for 100dh, about $15.00 Canadian.

When I was a travel agent, I used to tell my clients that Rule Number One is, always ask the price first. Good advice.

At the harbour in Essaouira, we'd patrolled the stalls, resisting the come-hither tactics of the vendors until we'd seen them all, and then we came back to Stall #1. It was high noon and I eyed the fish suspiciously, wondering how long it had been out there. I decided that to make sure our lunch was fresh, we should choose something that was alive -- lobster and crab. I boldly marched up to the stall and ordered one of each, and the vendor split the little lobster and prepared to cook it. We sat down, looking forward to this meal which we'd heard would be really good and really cheap (we'd heard around 70-80 dh for two).

At the stalls, payment is made upon ordering, and the man came to our table and asked for 380 dh. We were stunned, and I figured that (as I kept doing), I mislaid a zero somewhere). But that was the amount. He then showed us a price list: this fish, that fish...10 dh, 20 dh; crab...80 dh; lobster...300 dh. Why I ever thought it would all be the same price is still beyond me, except that there were no prices posted anywhere, I guess. I tried, with a pathetically thin application of charm, to change my order but he pointed out quite reasonably that the lobster was now dead and being cooked.

He did come down to 300dh, about $45.00 Canadian, which is way more than we've spent for lunch in recent memory. But being our usual fairly resilient selves, we rationalized that we'd make this our main meal of the day, and what the hell. So we perked up and waited for our meal.

Well... it was overcooked, stringy, and I think we each got about 1.5 good bites. The rest was sucking on various tendons and cartilege and imagining lobster. The crab was no better, even the claws.

By the end of the meal we did manage to laugh at it, or at least smile, but it really brought that ol' Rule Number One home.
