The best way to see all those beautiful villages, is to rent a car. But drivers, be aware, the road is very difficult!

    On the picture :

Walking between the kasbahs of A?t Benhaddou you will have to jump and climb, and you will even look up for pieces of mud to fall down on you.

    Open mouths at the Herboriste

The french word herboriste means one specialised in herbs and spices.
The herboriste we visited was very interesting. In his shop he has hundreds of herbs, soms known to us but most unknown. He invites you to smell and guess.
We bought some couscous herbs and tea.
Our daughters each got a small, nice gift from the man.

    My Guide -Mohamed Saidi-
    Kasbah Taouret Ouarzazate

This kasbah was brought to life for me by Mohamed (my guide)- If I'd wandered around by myself, I wouldn't have had anywhere near the insight that he gave of the features, history and customs of the region and kasbah.

It's often quite easy to shun guides- (not just in Morocco) whether official or not- there is often a suspicion that these people are out to 'fleece us' - Well this chap certainly wasn't - he was very knowledgeable, and professional, he'd studied tourism at University - I just wish I could remember half of what he told me! His English was very good too.

After showing me around the kasbah, he took me to a nearby shop, which I initially thought was for a 'commision opportunity' (I think I was a bit jaded still from the ever present stretched out hands for the expected baksheesh in Marrakech for the slightest 'service'), but it was so that the elderly shopkeeper could proudly point out the place at the back of the shop that was part of the kasbah.

The ceiling of the shop in this part is typical of the area, with interwoven oleander roots.

I bought a few post cards, and tried to offer the shop keeper a tip for showing me around, but ths was smilingly declined, he just took the money for the post cards.

Leaving the shop, my guide was waiting to take me around the outside kasbah streets to an artisans shop.

Again, I'm ashamed to say, I was a bit cynical - was this another ploy to gain commission- No it wasn't

    - it was simply people who are proud of their heritage and culture, wanting to share this with visitors. It was a bit of a wake up call! I hope this continues...

So I've got no hesitation to recommend Mohamed Saidi - Guide to Ouarzazate/ Morocco, he speaks English, French and Arabic.

Contact him on - GSM 061 61 05 14 or ask at the Kasbah ticket office.

May be the most beautiful Kasbah in Morocco. It's in the Unesco World Heritage LIst.
Nowadays, it sometimes is the place where they film parts of intrenational movies (i.e. Gladiator...)
You are left in a small city and have to go on foot to the kasbah

I rented a car for 500 Dirham/day and did the trip to Zagora (170 km).
We were a bit disappointed because we expected lots fo water in these valleys but everything was dry.

This is an example of the landscape we constantly saw

It can be very hot there in the desert, so you'de better take your time in the shade and carry lots of water.
Don't go there in the middle of the day..

Ait Ben Haddou is a fairly complete example of a fortified village called a Kasbah. These are dotted all over the High Atlas and Anti-Atlas regions of Morocco.

These Kasbahs date from medieval times, when it was necessary to protect people and livestock from raids by nomads, invading armies and even other villages. Medieval Morocco was a clannish society with different families vying for power and occasionally uniting to form a formidable force. The Berbers formed the bulk of Moorish army than invaded Spain and it is reckoned today that the closest blood relatives of the Berbers are actually the modern Spanish, such was their impact there.

Ait Ben Haddou now forms the focus of a tourist resort with all the trimmings (hotel, swimming pool, shops and restaurant). That said, the sight of Ait Ben Haddou across the dried river bed from the hotel complex is dramatic, as are the views from the summit. I found many of the Kasbahs similar to the Tibetan dzongs (fortresses or fortified monasteries or palaces), performing a not too dissimilar historical role (though without the religious meaning).
