Inside the Casbah Taorirt you will be able to visit the old synagogue, which has now been turned into a shop. However, the original structure and many of the odl objects that belonged to the synagogue, have been preserved by the shop's owner. Don't worry about asking for directions, everyone will try to lead you there.

The man is a weaver - and in all fairness he was a very nice man, and was not insistent in trying to sell his beautiful rugs. He showed me the synagogue and explained patiently what the old and rusty objects he had on display were used for.

It seems to be tradition with me that whenever I see someone on a donkey or mule (Turkmenistan, Egypt), he falls off. So I stood waiting for someone to fall off and...

...not once did anyone fall off!!! So I had to settle for a picture of someone not falling off!!!

The Atlas are the Berber heartland, not just within Morocco but right across neighbouring Algeria also. The Berber (the men still readily wear their traditional full length hooded coat - like the gentleman above is wearing) are the indigenous people of the area, with the Arabs late arrivals during the various invasions from the east along the southern Mediterranean coast. It is with the Arabs that Islam arrived, now followed to varying degrees by up to 98% of Berber and Arab Moroccans. Our leader for this trip was a devout Muslim and I made comment to one of my travel companions that he seemed a better person for it - whilst his beliefs were strong, he took a pragmatic, open approach to life and respected other people for who they were. This is something I can respect. He also had an okay sense of humour once you got to know him - even better. I guess the point I'm trying to make is because someone professes to a belief, they have a point of view and they should be respected for that. In this world, that is unfortunately not something people always do.

I forgot to mention that the area he took us to was his home area and a beautiful area he lives in too (even though the rain clouds hid most of the mountains - more to come).

South of Ouarzazate is the Draa Valley, where many kasbah's can be found.

The mountainous terrain of Morocco has on numerous occasions attracted the big Hollywood film studios to this area and within the walls of this are the sets for various films. These include Kundun (about the life of the 14th Dalai Lama, Tenzin Gyatso - there's a replica Gelugpa 'Yellow Hat' Buddhist Gompa / Monastery in here - see elsewhere for my very strong views on Tibet), Star Wars (the Tattooine scenes are split between here and Tunisia - there's actually a place called Tattooine in Mali, not too far from the better known Djenne and Timbuctou) and Gladiator amongst others. The Egyptian statues on the outside also hint at what the desert scenery can be used as a backdrop for.

The new town of Ourzazate is quite a nice place to gofor a little walk... it's very peaceful and the buildings, mostly pink, are nice and new (but not modern, luckily).

The most impressive one of the New mosque, with a very pretty mynareth. An inscription on a sign on its facade says (in arabic only, but luckily someone translated it from me) that king mohammed II and his wife had both stopped to pray at this mosque

The only real sight in Ouarzazate is the old Taourirt Kasbah. It's the largest Glaoui Kasbah of this region and it's beautifully restored. Near the kasbah is the old yewish mella, in which you can wander around a little bit. Don't be afraid to get lost, it's very small. You don't need a guide to explore it.

  • Address: Aven. Mohammed V
  • Directions: At the end of the city direction Boulmalne, just jump in the jellow studid bus (2,5 dirham) and you'll get there easily.
