Ouarzazates only historic building this housed the Glaoui rulers of southern morocco. Built in the 18th century and renovated in the 19th century and lived in by the large Glaoui family and their servants until thrown over by Hassan in the 1940s.
As with the Glaoui palace at Telouet the palace is ornately decorated with floral and geometric plasterwork and colourfully painted wooden ceilings and well worth visiting.

Climbing the sand dunes is definitely worth the effort, though it was kind of terrifying for someone with fear of heights. Those dunes are really steep.
But from top of the highest dune, the view on a sea of sand dunes is amazing. And ofcourse watching the sunset in the dunes should not be missed.

Zagora is a town in the south of the Draa Valley. From here, the paved road goes more southwards, to Mhamid, where the desert begins.
From Zagora, the trip to Timbouctou in Mali will take 52 days by camel. Five years before, I was on the other side of the Sahara, in Mali.

Taouirt kasbah is the kasbah of Ouarzazate. We went there in the evening just out of curiosity; it became a kind of surreal experience, with lots of children walking around us, all of them telling and acting the story of the kasbah at the same time. It was impossible to follow their stories as we walked through the dark alleys of the kasbah.

Address: Eastern part of Ouarzazate
I rented a car for 500 Dirham/day and did the trip to Zagora (170 km).
We were a bit disappointed because we expected lots fo water in these valleys but everything was dry.
This is an example of the landscape we constantly saw

May be the most beautiful Kasbah in Morocco. It's in the Unesco World Heritage LIst.
Nowadays, it sometimes is the place where they film parts of intrenational movies (i.e. Gladiator...)
You are left in a small city and have to go on foot to the kasbah

It's a filmstudio almost in the desert and is famous for some internationnaly known movies that were filmed there.
When you talk to someone in Ourzazate, believe him when he says he acted in one of the movies. Hiring local people is very good and cheap for the foreign companies...
When we were there, they just finished Kingdom of Heaven

The french word herboriste means one specialised in herbs and spices.
The herboriste we visited was very interesting. In his shop he has hundreds of herbs, soms known to us but most unknown. He invites you to smell and guess.
We bought some couscous herbs and tea.
Our daughters each got a small, nice gift from the man.

Strange...very strange! Mars or the Moon??
On this picture :
The road leading from Ouarzazate to the Draa valley makes the rise of Tizi-n-Tinififft (1660m) in a dark and stripped landscape with strange rock formations.

The road is somewhat better but it still a lace road.
On this picture :
The kasba of Taourirt occupies a hillock close to Ouarzazate, within sight of the vast reserve lake of the dam El-Mansour Eddahbi, which feeds out of water and electricity all the area.
Since Ouarzazate was the starting point for the exploration of the region, you can see the rest of it on the Tinerhir page.
