Province d' Ouarzazate Things to Do

  • Wandering Around

I had a quick wander around by myself and found some old ruins, right next door to the Kasbah, which to me were more intresting than the Kasbah itself

  • The Kasbah

It costs around 10 or 20 Dirhams to wander around the Kasbah, through it's alleys and small rooms. I didn't find it to be the most interesting in Morocco, but there are some nice views from the top.

info taken from their website:Dunes & Desert offers you the chance of having great moments in the most beautiful South Moroccan sites along with local people. Located in Ouarzazate, this company lets you enjoy all the entire region has to offer: the fabulous High-Atlas Mountains, the fertile green palm trees of the Drâa, the traditional Kasbahs,...

  • Movie Studio

This little city in the middle of the oasis desert boasts for decades a movie studio where scenes from huge Hollywood successes such as Lawrence of Arabia, Star Wars and some french like Asterix&Obelix were shot. The studio in itself is not very impressive and most people go there just to see where star worked. The guided tour lasts about 1 hour.

  • Centre of Ouarzazate

"Yellow city" I would call it. It impressed me by quiteness, compare to Marrakech, and also by more friendly people. Take the tour inside the labirint f peoples' houses. Our guide showed us the artificial house, built in between real ones, he told us that they it was used to shoot the part of a movie with Jean Claude Van Damme.

  • Summer snow in Morocco?

In the High Atlas mountains there are some peaks more than 4000 mt high. While travelling from Ouarzazate to Marrakesh I passed through wonderful mountain landscapes and I could still see some snow on the highest peaks. Amazing, in summer! (much more snow, and even skiing is possible, in winter).

  • Les gorges du Todra (2)

I suggest you visit the gorges early in the morning as it can get really hot (at least in summer, when I visited). Look out for scorpions, especially if you climb the rocks: there are many and they can be poisonous.

  • Les gorges du Todra (1)

The Todra gorges are 15 km from Tinerhir, a dull town 100 Km east ogf Ouarzazate. It can be difficult to arrive here by public transportation, but it's really worth the time. The main Todra gorge is magnificent, 10 meters wide and hundreds of meters high. There are palm trees growing between the rocks as there is a source of water. The landscape...

  • Tamegroute: the moslim sanctuary

Tamegroute is still an important religious centre and there is a famous sanctuary dating back to the 13th century. There is an ancient library inside and tourists are allowed to visit. Many walls and doors are nicely decorated.

  • Tamegroute: an historical village

Tamegroute is a village about 20 km south of Zagora. It has been for centuries an important religious and cultural centre and there are still many reminders from the glorious past. The architecture of the village is quite nice, like a big kasbah with many traditional buildings.

  • Around Zagora

The landscape immediately around Zagora is pretty desertic. There are occasional cultivations that require a lot of hydraulic works in order to have enough water.

  • Zagora: the desert is near...

Zagora is about 100 km south of Ouarzazate. It not such an interesting city, but people are friendly and the Sahara is near. There was a sand storm when I was visiting and it was amazing. There are many attractions nearby, like Tamegroute, the Draa valley and the first sand dunes further south.

  • Old Ouarzazate: the palace in the Kasbah

The only building not almost completely ruined in the Khasbah is the old palace, that is open for tourists. It is interesting to visit and there are some nicely decorated walls and ceilings.

  • Old Ouarzazate: the Kasbah

Modern Ouarzazate is the administrative center of the region and it is not an interesting city to visit. But about two kms from the town center you can easily walk to the old Kasbah, a fascinating deserted place with old traditional houses made of stone (uninhabited, now) and narrow winding streets.
