Don't photograph the guys posing with camels

There's a panorama north of Tinherir on the way to the Todra gorge overlooking the palmeries and the villages on the other side of the valley. There are guys dressed in blue posing with camels. They'll invite you to take a photo of them. Then they'll hit you up for money. I saw one hassling an old man who was trying to get back on his tour van and he wouldn't let him go until he paid them. The people in the tour van of course did nothing! Next, the same guy hassled a woman he just invited to take his picture.

Look, no people here

Moroccans are often wary of having their photo taken and this was particularly true in the old town in Tinerhir. The merest sign of a camera was enough to bring angry looks and fierce wagging of fingers, even if it was pointed nowhere near them. Children and old ladies were the most likely to complain but as always it's completely inconsistent - some people are fine with it, others aren't. Some even encourage it and will gladly pose. To save yourself an ear bashing or worse, and out of respect for the locals, it's best to ask first, especially in the Mellah and old town.

While the centre of Tinerhir is made into a typical modern Moroccan town, the villages around the oases have retained traditions and old life styles. The odd satellite dish could destruct your feeling...

Tinerhir

Tinerhir is in a very productive agricultural area, and situated by a large oasis. It is also very scenic. In addition to the gorges, the town and the surrounding countryside is also worth a look.
