    CTM Bus in and out

A CTM bus leaves Fes daily at around 11.00 for Tangier via Chefchaouen, takes about 3 1/2 hours and costs 70dh, plus a small baggage fee. The bus can be quite full so it's advisable to book ahead. In Fes, arrive at least half an hour early and make sure that you hand your large baggage in at the check-in desk.

Getting out of Chaouen, CTM buses leave for both Fes and Tangier at about 16.00. Be very careful which bus you get on, as we ended up on the Fes bus by mistake although thankfully the ticket guy worked out that the numbers were wrong for the Fes bus and got us off and onto the right one! Phew! Make sure that you get here well before your bus is due to leave. The CTM desk is inside the main building. A ticket to Tangier costs 40dh and again, booking the day before is advisable.

There are probably other buses out that may be cheaper, but we used CTM where possible(the national bus company) as they tended to be more comfortable. There also tended to be less hassle in the CTM bus stations.

NB: The cafes at the bus station in Chaouen are actually quite cheap and do quite decent food, so it's somewhere to consider if you get here very early for your bus and get peckish.

  • The Wheels on the Bus Go Squeak, Bump, Squeak

by blint Updated Jan 3, 2008

    At the bus station!

Squeak Bump, Squeak, all day long!

From Tangier to Chaouen we got an IDEAL bus which was typically old, run down, overloaded (people standing too) and what's more there was a FRIDGE strapped to the roof!!!! As you can imagine it was far from ideal and of course slow as it twisted round the Rif Mountains climbing laboriously towards it's destination. At least it was amazingly cheap even if it did take up a while to fond the main bus station in Tangier. At this point we didn't realise that the 'best' company to take is CTM which is located just outside the port in Tangier. Well, another reason we skipped CTM was the bad connection times.

It took us 3 hours to travel the short distance between these two towns and when we arrived we were more or less in the middle of no where in the dark. We followed the other people in an upwards direction to find out where to go as we didn't arrive at the bus station (this happened both times I have been here). Which is a good thing really as the bus station is further away at the bottom of the hill which Chaouen is on and it is a steep 20 min climb up to the town. You could always get a taxi I suppose if you arrive at a good time.

On our exit journey we noticed that the opening times or the office are pretty slack as the ticket guy likes to take random tea breaks in a nearby cafe. Also the bus was very late arriving and if you are carrying luggage a guy comes to take them and load them on the bus before it enters into the station.

It costs 27 drm to travel between Chaouen and Tangier. That's like 2.70 €
