The Fez airport is around 10kms from the new part of the city. Direct flights from London and Paris fly into Saiss Airport. The national airline Royal Air Moroc has flights twice a day from Casablanca.

Fes has a small airport - Sais - about 15 km south of the city, near the N8 road. Ryanair has been flying to Fes since late 2006 and, hence, we chose Fes as our starting point for our trip in 2007 . There aren't too many facilities at the airport as it's not used by many international airlines but I’m sure this will change soon. There is a coffee shop, car-hire stands and, perhaps most important of all, as you can’t get Moroccan Currency until you enter the country, an ATM machine.

Buses travel to most major cities in Morocco and CTM is probably the best known operator and a little more than other bus companies. Travel from Casablanca will take around 5 hrs, Marrakesh – 9 hours, Meknes – 1 hour and Tangier – 6 hours. There are two bus depots in Fez.

Since there are no cars etc allowed in the Medina, donkeys and mules are still the best form of transporting wares around the narrow streets and lanes.

If driving to Fez just be aware that you cannot drive into the old part of Fez (Fes el-Bali). The roads between cities are very good but probably not advisable to be driven at night. You can hire cars in Fez but it is probably better to hire a petit taxi when outside the Medina.

Trains run from Marrakech, Tangier, Casablanca and Rabat and arrive at the only train station in Fez. There are overnight trains running from Tangier. The trains are operated by ONCF which run in conjunction with buses to get you to outlying areas. There are two classes – first and second and both have compartments. In first class you can book your actual seat.

CTM have 7 buses departing for Casablanca.
Journey time 5 hours.
Tickets are around 90 dirhams plus 5 dirhams for luggage.
All buses depart from the CTM Bus Station near Place Hussein de Jordanie next to the mosque.
Please use prices as a rough guide only.

Arrival by train is a nightmare when it comes to getting a petit taxi.
At the taxi stand to the right of the station, they wanted 40 mad. I'd just paid just 5 mad for my trip to the station in Meknes, so I was pretty sure 40 was a rip off. I went to the main street and eventually got one for 20 mad.
When I got to my riad, I was told the right price should be just over 10 mad.
Irritating to say the least, and gives a very negative 1st impression of the city.
