This is a triangular open-air Arabic market, usually called "souk". This market is very much unlike the cramped corners that you would find in Fez. The Market is mainly occupied by coppersmiths and you can see them working on copper bowls and kettles, hammering them into various shapes. The intricate oriental designs of these copper items will certainly make you want to buy some. There are also other workshops and stalls all round the place. This place was once a fertile valley with the river Fez running beside it and the sight of a few trees will remind you of the past. Inhale the coarse odor of smoldering iron and that blends with the Moorish ambience of the place. The place is one of the liveliest places in Fez and the continuous sounds of chiseling and hammering creates a strange enjoyable rhythm. The place is one of the largest open spaces in Fez and near it is the Kairaouine Mosque and the Kairaouine Library. This library had once been home to several valuable books and allegedly had on of the world's best book collections. However, general public is not allowed to access the library at present. Opposite to the library is the Seffarine Medersa.

Apart from the usual pieces of arts and crafts works and jewelry that visitors of Morocco take back home, it is worth while to take a look at the Moroccan festive mainstream fashion that is offered at the Fès souks. Alternately with western-style evening robes the "marocaines" favour wearing the "caftan" for weddings and other important parties. In the shopping streets of the large cities the shops often offer fashionable and Haute Couture caftans, while the souks rather sell the traditional, a bit "touristic" style of caftans. The prices at the souks range from 500 to 3000 MAD and more. At some shops the caftan is tailored according to the customer's wishes. Who is interested in the latest caftan fashion might want to take a look at the "Femmes du Maroc" fashion-magazine, that appears once a month in French and often dedicates a few pages to festive fashion (also on the internet "www.femmesdumaroc.com"). Once a year the "Caftan", a fashion show in Marrakech, presents the latest Haute couture. Theme: Women's Clothes

This is a magnificent shop retailing high class goods by local craftsmen. The amount of items on display and quality is outstanding, providing a range of goods in size and value which cater for all budgets. You will see similar items much cheaper in the medina, however can you be sure of the quality and will the metal work change colour soon after you return home. Quality metalwork should not change colour. We purchased a Bellews, hand made from camel bone and metal, it looked magnificent in the shop and still looks the same in our home 6 months later. We had no problems getting it through the strict Australian Customs on return. They examined the Bellews, checked the camel bone to ensure it had been properly treated, no dry blood or camel hair attached.
Everything you see in the attached photos and more.
Prices vary with the individual item, however costly compared to medina stall prices, but comparatively very cheap compared with anything I could purchase at home. Leave a Comment

Overview of the tannery by Venturingnow Find the famous fes tannery and there will be tons of leather stores in the area. They sell everything you can imagine. From slippers to purses, chairs to jackets. I purchased a pair of yellow, pointy slippers that were very popular with the locals. Leave a Comment Theme: Men's Clothes

There are plenty of excuses to go shopping mad in Fes. The fine craftsmanship and collections of antique textiles, pottery, leather, wood and metalwork are readily available in several shops catering to collectors of fine art and travellers looking for knick-knacks for friends and family. Shoppers will be able to find several shops up and down the Fes medina's two main streets; Talaa S'ghira and Talaa K'bira. Explorers may venture further of the beaten track to find some hidden gems, possibly with cheaper prices. Serious shoppers should shop alone (no guides or Moroccan friends) as shop owners may assume that your friend will want a commission from a sale. Is it possible to have a guide to bartering in Morocco? Probably not, but here is some advice you may find useful whilst shopping in the Fes medina: Visit lots of shops so you can get an idea of the range of prices for the item that you are looking for. Make sure that you compare eggs with eggs, as often quality can vary massively. As general rule of thumb when buying something is not to ask the price of the item immediately, enquire about other items before hand. Once you have your price try offering half of the maximum you would like to pay and gradually make small incremental rises up to what you are prepared to pay. Try to make smaller steps in your upwards direction than the seller's downwards steps. Remember when buying small items that you may only be haggling over 1 or 2 Euros. Often the margins the seller makes is very small and you would both be a lot happier if you swallowed your pride and paid up that little bit extra. Finally have fun and only pay what you feel you are happy to. Sometimes shop owners will give a reasonable price and not accept bartering, others will quote insane prices with the expectation that you will haggle. Theme: Other

Great shop in Talaa Kabira for moraccan crafts, jewelry, great leader, candles. All the articles are a mix of mroccan artisanat and a contampory style. That's the only one shop where you can find that kind of crafts in Fez.
Candles, leader, pasmenterie, ceramic,... but all with a great design. Theme: Local CraftAddress: On the Talaa Kabira, closed to Ain Azleten, MedinaDirections: On the Talaa Kabira, closed to Ain Azleten, Medina

Balek! Balek! by Yaletown This Medina is huge!!! They actually suggest a local guide because you can get lost in here. This shopping area is from the 9th century and it looks like it. No pictures will do it justice and you will be amazed at how you feel like you are going back in time as you walk around the stores, the blacksmiths, wood workers, etc. Absolutely amazing. Just watch out you may here "Balek, balek", if you do get to the side a donkey is coming through the narrow corridor. Overall this was a great experience, although we didn't get a chance to wander around and buy things I truly felt like I was way back in time. Leave a Comment Theme: Local Craft
