Ceramics

Safi is not a tourist place, but should you have an interest in Moroccan pottery you will be able to see ceramics being produced in the old way. Just outside Bab Chaba you will see the earthen kilns perched on a hill , as you wonder round you will be invited to view the potters at work and given a short tour of the process, moulding the clay, turning, glazing and painting. A small tip or a purchase is appreciated for the tour. Eventually you will find yourself in a shop, surprise surprise ! Safi is awash with plates, bowls, vases & tiles, take your time if you want to make a purchase, what ever the price, you can say you have seen the same thing cheaper elsewhere.5km's outside town on the road to Marrakech there are some large ceramic factories, They mass produce for export, some interesting items can be found at reasonable prices.

Phosphate on the left

The harbor has been specially built to export the phosphate ore or the phosphate fertilizers, the main income of Morocco. The whole coast is rugged and has very few natural shelters. This was the place phosphate coming from a hundred kilometers quarries inland could be easily brought. There was no shelter. They built a sheltered harbor from nothing with huge jetties.

Phosphate facilities are everywhere, on the right of the road, on the left. Phosphate dust is everywhere, on the trees, on the road, on the windscreen of your car, in the air… and in your lungs ! As you do not stay long that does not matter, as phosphate is not toxic. But for those who live here that can bring an illness named fluorosis. It is due to an excess of fluorine in the body, brought with the phosphate dust, of which it is a natural impurity. It brings dental decay and later skeletal problems. Human are concerned but much more animals (sheeps and cows).

For several kilometers, the coastal road runs between the phosphate complex and the phosphate special harbor. This is not a beautiful sight, but this is something that exists and which is very important for Morocco.
