Medina by Jim_Eliason The old City is a great place to wander through winding streets and imagine you step back in time 200 years ago. Leave a Comment

As any Moroccan town, the medina (old quarters) is almost a mandatory visit if you are interested in feeling "the life" of the city and being close to the locals (and other tourists too, for better or for worse). Perhaps not very "traditional", with much less of the "medieval" environment of other historical cities of Morocco, some of their buildings reminiscent of South Spain, others with a colonial look. Nevertheless, probably very exotic to the eyes of someone who has never been to non-western town before. Perhaps you'll get disappointed if you are expecting to be impressed by this or that particular place you read about somewhere (guidebook, touristic panflet, magazine article, website, etc.). Don't expect much "pretty" sights, just try to breathe the environment and let go. The area between the old Anglican Church, the Grand and Petit Socco and the Kasbah make a nice stroll and are easily walkable in 2 or 3 hours without too much hurry. But be prepared to some climbing, as the Kasbah relatively high. Just up the Grand Socco, on the way to the Anglican church, there is a real traditional market which doesn't appear too popular with tourists, where you can find what appear to be real peasants selling there goods, dressed in there colourful traditional clothes. The women hats are particulary striking, very tall and decorated with coloured wool. Another interesting place to "feel" the town it's the beach and it's avenue, which is fully crowded at the summer evenings. It seems that after dinner, every Moroccan goes out to the street! Traffic is terrible, a complete chaos that can be compared with Cairo, Bangkok or Delhi.

Inside a Typical Shop by Jetgirly I think I had watched one too many films set in Egypt when I imagined the type of shopping I would do on my trip to Tangiers. Our tour visited only one store- a "co-operative" staffed by hard sellers pushing carpets and homewares. Prices seemed to be negotiable, but we had some Arabic people on our tour who told us the carpets were quite low quality. There was some decent jewelry and some uncomfortable-looking leather shoes, but nothing that I couldn't find back home (in North America and / or Europe) for the same price. Leave a Comment

Tangiers is an eclectic blend of architectural styles, from colonial British outside the center to crammed homes inside the casbah (walled city). Our tour took us past one of the King's palaces and into the old heart of the city, allowing us to really see the contrast between how the rich and poor in Tangiers live. Leave a Comment

by keeweechic There are several churches in Tangier, a 19th century Spanish Church, (which is opposite the great mosque), the Church of the Immaculate Conception, St Andrews Anglican Church built in 1894 where American journalist Walter Harris is buried in its cemetery – actually there are 3 protestant and 6 Catholic churches in total. View from the Harbour by Jetgirly We were staying in Marbella, Spain and our hotel organized a one-day trip to Tangiers with Andalucia Tours, a company for whom I cannot find contact information. Personally, I would not recommend this particular company because the bus was forty-five minutes late picking us up at the hotel (a big thing when your scheduled pickup time is 6.30 am), there was a lot of pressure to give the employees tips, we only spent about four hours in the city of Tangiers and we had to leave at 2.45 pm instead of making full use of the day. However, I got a general overview of the city while I was there, and I can recommend some things to do. The total cost for this particular trip was €60 per person, and the company required that a minimum of three people per hotel participated if you wanted hotel pick-up. Travel time to and from Marbella, Spain was about three hours each way. Leave a Comment Address: N A

This is the old part of Tangier, and the most important of typical or esaiest gate to enter it, is from the Grand Socco. For more pics, visit the travelogue. Leave a Comment

Poor Camel by Jetgirly After driving through a maze of mono-cultural neighbourhoods (The British Quarter, the American Quarter, the French Quarter, etc...) our tour bus made its first stop at the top of a hill, where visitors had the choice of riding a camel, taking a photo, or feeling sorry for the poor animals and listening to them make horrible sad noises. I chose the latter. The cost of a camel ride was €1 and the duration was about thirty seconds in a circle around a parking lot. Leave a Comment
