Tangiers's Kasbah - see two continents at once!

by dlytle Updated Oct 27, 2003

    4 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

Tangiers Kasbah is built on the highest point of the city. Its gate opens on to a large open courtyard that leads to Dar el Makhzen, the 17th century former Sultan’s palace that now serves as a museum. The building boasts some beautifully carved wooden ceilings and a marble courtyard. There is also a museum devoted to Moroccan arts and archeology.

From the open courtyard you have one of the best views of the world since the Kasbah is standing on the top of the hill on which Tangier is built. There aren't many places where you can see two continents at once.

It has an incredible view across the Straits of Gibraltar to Spain. This definitely rates as a major attraction of Tangier. The road all the way up from the harbor to the hill top is steep and colorful.

Visit the Museum of Moroccan Art

by seagoingJLW Updated Apr 16, 2003

    1.5 out of 5 starsHelpfulness

There are so many wonderful things to see here. There are mosaic tiles, jewelry, carpets, ceramics, copper and brass, and leather. Even Moroccan rooms are on display.

The museum is housed in the Prince's apartments of the Dar el Makhzen, once the Governor's Palace. It was built in the seventeenth centruy and is laid out around a patio.

There is a small fishing harbour in the Bay of Tangier where you can find both pleasure and commercial vessels. Fish is caught daily and offered in many of the local restaurants.

Throughout the medina, you will see quite elaborate rustic iron bird cages, some which I believe, can be used as lanterns with candles.

Are the snakes really deadly? Are they really charmed? It's a mystery! Get out your spare change and watch in amazement as the cobra (hopefully) doesn't kill you.
