While strolling around the western part of the Medina walls you will come across the Tour as-Sarragine, the so-called Saracen tower. From here you have a pleasant view on the Middle Atlas.

The tower, unfortunately crumbling, has a curious construction: square at the base, and round at the top. The adjacent fortifications date from Almohade times.

A Stroll Around the Medina Walls

The Medina Walls:

A very beautiful promenade is the way around the Medina walls. Along the route around the Medina there are some points with a beautiful view on the surrounding valleys.

The largest part of the fortification walls has been built in medieval times under the Almohades. But the Merinides and Saadites have added and reinforced.

Nowadays part of the ancient Medina walls has crumbled. The city tries to start reconstruction. The works however progress slowly because of a lack of financial means.

This is the view from the castle wall of the old medina of Taza from the Nouvelle ville in the Avenue Moulay Youssef. You can walk towards the hill and go up the big stairs after the roudabout and local gendarmerie all the way to the old medina close to the Place Moulay Hassan.

As this is an ancient town, you have to go inside Taza old medina on top of the hill to see hold monuments. Aprt from the market medina you also have the Andalous Mosque in Rue Koubet and also a very restrict place for non-muslims is the Grand Mosque considered to be one of the most interesting buildings in whole Morocco.
