The Art of Haggling
  • Tip Rating:
  • Shopping in Morocco is a unique experience. No visit to Morocco would be complete without visiting a souk.

The skill at which a shopkeeper can get you to not only pay several times what he would charge another Moroccan, but to get you to buy something you don't even want is amazing. All you have to do is show the slightest interest in something and the game begins. Ask the price and you've bought it already as far as the shopkeeper is concerned! They'll start at ten times a fair price if they think you'll pay it. They have nothing to lose except some time, which you will notice they never run short in supply in Morocco. REQUIRES PATIENCE!! Stick to what you feel is a fair price. Once you reach your top price keep repeating it, over and over. They'll counter with "what is your best price" over and over again too. Eventually they'll get the point. I think I've mastered that skills by now. I have brought back so many Moroccan goods to the U.S. and am so happy when I see the same goods at a store here for 10 times the price.
Then I know my bargaining power paid off.

Check out my "Items I've Bought from Morocco Travelogue"

What you think is fair....most likely way less than what the selling price is.

    All tourist areas: Morrocan Silver
  • Tip Rating:
  • Do you like silver as a form of jewlery? If you do you won't be dissapointed in Morocco.
There are rings, necklaces, bracelets and bangles everywhere. Cheap and decrorative they make nice presnts to bring home.

Not expensive and again it will be up to your bargaining powers.

  • Most craft shops and local markets that attract tourists.

Pottery of all shapes and sizes, for may different uses can be found on sale all over Morocco. Not the easiest thing to carry around, especially when returning home, but if packed carefully it can make a lovely souvineer of your trip.

You will have to bargain hard for the best deal.

In Morocco are a lot of tourist shops in every town where tourist will come.
You can find all kind of local crafts, pottery, leather goods, jewellery, clothes, slippers, carpets and much more.
If you want to buy something, it's good to look around first at several shops before you make your choice and find something out about prices. And bargaining is of course part of the job.

In Agadir, Marrakech, Zagora and Ait Ben Haddou I found so my favourite shops for Berber, Mauretanian and Tuareg stuff I liked.

    Spices, herbs, local food
  • Tip Rating:
  • Of course you can go to the supermarkets to do your shopping. But when you are in Morocco it gives al lot more of fun to go to the souqs, not only for the shopping, but also for the ambiance, the colours, the aroma's. Especially for herbs and spices the souqs are the best places to go.

When I visit the souqs, I am always curious and like to discover all kinds of known and unknown local goods. It surprises always to see the huge amount of different goods and the eyecatching way the sellers show their articles for sale.

Most main market & Souq areas: Carpets Galore
  • Tip Rating:
  • Yes I know it's everybody's pet hate in these countries! But not all carpet shops are hard sell and over priced.
If you have the time why not take up the offer to look at some carpets? You may be pleasantly surprised.

Some carpets can be exceptional value if you are into this kinds of thing. But remember that if you buy one you have to carry it all the way home! So why not choose a smallish one that won't cost a fortune and will be a nice reminder of your trip.

Again this is up to your bargaining skills.
I saw one young lady barter down from 2000DH to a more reralistic 350DH and let me tell you this, both parties were happy?

The Souqs of Morocco: Leather goods & trinkets
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Souqs of Morocco are famous for their crafts, especially leather goods.
Why not buy yourself a pair of genuine leather slippers that you will probably never wear, but they will make a great talking point.

You will have to bargain hard, but this is expected. You should be looking to get a reduction in the asking price of between 30 to 50%.. You will know when you are not being realistic with your offer as the seller will usually withdraw from negotiations. Remember that the goods are only worth what you are prepaired to pay for them and you should not bargain for something you don't really want.

Shoes and slippers made from local leather, various handicrafts and iron work lamps are the most noteable.
I saw some nice lamps made from streched leather and then painted.

It's all down to your bargaining skills. I would recomend you shop around to try and get the feel for prices before commiting yourself.

The Souqs of Morocco: Comfortable Slippers
  • Tip Rating:
  • Leather slippers and footwear in general are great quality and price. They come in every shape, size and colour. Take a good look around before deciding on what to buy, as you are going to have to live with it when you get home.

Pay what you think is a fair price, don't try to beat the seller down until they lose the plot.
Ask around to find out a fair price.

    Shopping in Chaoun

  • All the shop that line the narrow streets of Chaoun are bristling with colour and sweet smells.

Most shops sell things for tourists like hats, cushions, shawls, pipes, Arabictea pots and glasses, ‘traditional’ Arabic clothes, plates, lamps, marble chess sets, ornate tables, little wooden boxes, leather bags, flavoured tobacco, rugs and lots of other interesting looking things.

Just take a look at the photo for an example of all the different kinds of things you’ll find there waiting for you. You’ll be spoilt for choice if you’re looking for gifts to take back to your friends and family.

It's all so cheap. You'll be amazed.

Carpet shops have flooded Morocco-theyre everywher: Buying carpets in Morocco
  • Tip Rating:
  • Cabeyp has given you a lot of what you need to know. ive got a bit of info in amongst my pages and yes Telouet is where I recommend - if you get there tell them the connection. otherwise no the tour leaders wont necessarily know much other than the commission theyll get and 3/4 of the salesmen in the shops dont know a really good one from a commercial one (good for good dealers when they go shopping!) - but when you are on tour out in the country if you get taken to any town's weekly souks look out for carpets there tho its still necessary to be in the know as the dealers buy a lot of the womens rugs these days so that the real stuff is not sold at the souks anymore.

but there are some places/ town souks that do still and this is where its best to buy - direct from the women as the shops that you see all over the place have bought from the dealers who make enormous amounts of money by buying from the ladies whove worked hard to make them and accept such small amounts of money for them.

and yes theres a huge factory line business in morocco - especially towns like Tazenakht churning out copies made from cheaper wool with cheaper dyes and on machines.the market is absolutely flooded. and really there is no reason why carpets - unless they are antique top quality or special (which the guys i know at Telouet were always good for having and having a good knowledge of) - should be the asking price that moroccan rug rip off merchants are expecting to get from tourists. so thats the next thing - you have to haggle. a third of the asking price is not far off in a lot of cases!

visiting an artisanal ensemble is a good idea. eg ive been and it was interesting but i certainly could see the difference in quality that i knew and the quality that wasnt there at the time i visited the production line ensemble artisanal. you get a good idea too of prices for loads of other enticing goods that will appeal to you. you will get to see how so much cheaper the slippers/babouches should be in the souks. and how much cheaper things can be got for than at the ensemble artisanal! and get an idea of quality there too.

and on top of that even a western carpet dealer i met here whos been dealing in international carpets for years has said theres a new machine thats out making carpets that even the professionals now cant tell are made by machine! but if its a rug you really like and if you believe the wool is good quality theres not really a problem with it being machine made!
