Souks and markets from around Morocco: What you can bring home to remember Morocco!

by angiebabe

Yes quite a number of things - i have a pic in my Esssaouira page with some things - but particularly Moroccan carpets - they are wonderfully colourful and interesting - check the varying quality but generally the carpets to be found are of good quality whether factory line copies from places like Tazenakt that flood most of the shops around Morocco or made by women in their homes. I have lovely silver, opal, agate jewellery, leather cushions/pouffes, leather lampshades (you have to test the leather in the lampshades tho - apply heat and if it starts to stink its not good and will stink your house out when you use it backhome!), paintings, decorated mirrors, tagine dishes (buy them at a local souk but even then if they see youre a foreigner the price will go up), ceramic items - bowls and containers and so on, i love the Thuya wood products at Essaouira. Music!! - almost every town will...

Dry fruit

by Veroali

Fruit in Morocco was always fresh and very cheap. We loved dates and figs, so delicious, not possible to find in czech. Dates grow on trees everywhere around. Figs are tied in long stripes and the seller cut how much you want. Also there are many shops with lots of kinds of nuts. Little money

Spices, herbs, local food

by sachara

Of course you can go to the supermarkets to do your shopping. But when you are in Morocco it gives al lot more of fun to go to the souqs, not only for the shopping, but also for the ambiance, the colours, the aroma's. Especially for herbs and spices the souqs are the best places to go. When I visit the souqs, I am always curious and like to discover all kinds of known and unknown local goods. It surprises always to see the huge amount of different goods and the eyecatching way the sellers show their articles for sale.

Travellers cheques

by suvanki

This was my answer to a forum question on travellers cheques. In the cities/ large towns there are plenty of banks/ATMs etc. Hotels will often offer exchange facilities, but these can sometimes be a bit 'hit and miss' On a couple of occasions the hotel wasn't able to exchange my cheques, and I was sent on a long trek to 2 banks before I could get them exchanged. Some banks charge commission for each cheque, some for each transaction.Travellers cheques may be accepted in hotels and for buying larger purchases, but not for smaller items.I now tend to rely on withdrawing cash from ATMs - (though this isn't always 100% successful either)and carry some 'emergency sterling' Banks usually open 0830 - 1130 and 1430 - 1630 Mon - Fri. Some branches open Saturday morning too. On Fridays, the lunch break is usually longer to allow for the main Friday prayer time. (Ramadam affects opening times...

Shop Essouira

by jlynyc

The souks in the medina of Marrakech can be overwhelming due to the sheer size and number. For a less stressful and pressured environment, if you have the time to take a side trip, head to Essaouira, a small coastal city 3 hours west. It's beautiful and the temperatures are more forgiving. The souks there offer all the same items as those in Marrakech, and perhaps at even better prices. Regardless, it is much less crowded and harried and I found shopping there to be a much nicer experience. On your way to Essaouira, keep your eyes open for goats in the tree! The goats eat the fruit from the argan tree and spit the nuts onto the ground. The nuts are then collected and made into oil, soaps or perfumes. It's a UNESCO agricultural site, as it's the only place in the world where these trees grow. The oil is used similarly to olive oil. Argan oil, wood carvings (especially in Essaouira -...

Barganning

by Ognid

bargaining It is a tricky thing to do. Ask what the price is and then go with about 25% of that as your starting price. If you pay more that 60% of their asking price, you are getting ripped off. If they refuse to go any lower, simply walk away and they will usually come out after you willing to renegotiate their last price. Also, find some flaw in what ever it is that you are interested in buying so you can use that as leverage to decrease the price. I would also say that I can find the exact same item back home in the States for a much lower price since they know how much other souqs will be willing to sell for also. That seemed to work better than saying that I saw it somewhere else in the souqs for a lower price. When I tried that, they told me to take them to where it was sold at a lower price (ooops!).the other thing that worked well was good cop bad cop (me and my wife). She would...

the souks - Marrakech

by sanluipal

In Marrakech try the souks (like street-shops) and walk without time. See everything and buy what you like. Remember they ask a bigger price, to negotiate with you. I bought some things by 1/3 of first price. If you have a guide, he will try to conduct you to some shops, which prices are bigger. Buy in the street!

The Apple Store - Univers Digital: A Scrap of Heaven for MacAddicts

by JamalMorelli

WARNING: This tip will only make sense to those of us for whom owning a Mac is a way of life. If you don't get moist at the thought of owning the newest powerbook or the latest G5 - skip this tip. What makes it so special? Count the Mac stores on a hand in this country and ask me again. (Nearly none - this is the only one I know) I thought I had to buy everything Mac related outside the country until I found these Mac-Cats. For Mac owners living in Morocco - you will need this place. Mac products. There are alot of useless classic books and older equipment - the place is probably staying afloat by it's iPod sales. Pick up a nano for a gift for your Moroccan friends. Spread the Mac faith, my child. Typically expensive Mac prices that we users have come to grudgingly accept over time.
