...If You Need A Goat Head or Two: Interesting Shopping Experience...

by DeoPitt

Much has already been said about the Souks in the Medinas. It is all somewhat exotic in that everything except the bootleg Nike goods are locally designed and produced. It is certainly part of the experience of walking through the old cities. What I saw that seemed better was some of the art work and table linens. I also wanted to buy a beat up flintlock or knife to hang on a wall at home, but I would never have gotten it past security. That being said, all of the quality shops were in the new sections of the bigger cities like Fes or Marakech. An example of this was L'ORIENTALISTE 15 Rue de la Liberté, Marrakesh Phone: 04/43-40-74 that sold nice crafts, art, some furnishings (downstairs), etc. The staff left you alone and it was air conditioned. ...(don't read on if you want to keep a happy impression of Moroccan shopping)...... In the old Madinas it was low grade spices you don't want...

Most main market & Souq areas: Carpets Galore

by Vintom

Yes I know it's everybody's pet hate in these countries! But not all carpet shops are hard sell and over priced. If you have the time why not take up the offer to look at some carpets? You may be pleasantly surprised. Some carpets can be exceptional value if you are into this kinds of thing. But remember that if you buy one you have to carry it all the way home! So why not choose a smallish one that won't cost a fortune and will be a nice reminder of your trip. Again this is up to your bargaining skills.I saw one young lady barter down from 2000DH to a more reralistic 350DH and let me tell you this, both parties were happy?

The Souqs of Morocco: Comfortable Slippers

by Vintom

Leather slippers and footwear in general are great quality and price. They come in every shape, size and colour. Take a good look around before deciding on what to buy, as you are going to have to live with it when you get home. Pay what you think is a fair price, don't try to beat the seller down until they lose the plot.Ask around to find out a fair price.

Souk or the bazzar: Haggle, Haggle, Haggle!

by jujuking

There are many small outdoor shops and vendors selling just about everything. Perfect for souveir shopping.Watch out for those shopkeers! They come at you like bees to honey and some will follow you around to get you to visit their shop. The are very persistent! Whatever you think would be a good Moroccan souvenir - from jewerly, clothes, little Moroccan lamps made of animal hide, or glass candle holders, intricate plates to beautfiully carved wooden boxes.Just don't overbuy, remember, you have to pack all that with you home. It is a fact of life that the shopkeeper will charge you tourist prices, so haggling is a must. However, even though the prices are hiked, things are still so cheap you may feel guilty about haggling. However, still bring the price down about 20-30%. Afterall, isn't that the fun part?

The Souqs of Morocco: Leather goods & trinkets

by Vintom

The Souqs of Morocco are famous for their crafts, especially leather goods. Why not buy yourself a pair of genuine leather slippers that you will probably never wear, but they will make a great talking point. You will have to bargain hard, but this is expected. You should be looking to get a reduction in the asking price of between 30 to 50%.. You will know when you are not being realistic with your offer as the seller will usually withdraw from negotiations. Remember that the goods are only worth what you are prepaired to pay for them and you should not bargain for something you don't really want. Shoes and slippers made from local leather, various handicrafts and iron work lamps are the most noteable.I saw some nice lamps made from streched leather and then painted. It's all down to your bargaining skills. I would recomend you shop around to try and get the feel for prices before...

Souks: Pheww

by wrldtravler

Most of the shops, which specialize in everything from gourmet dates to humdrum henna, have the prices clearly marked. For tourists with haggling fatigue, this is a welcome relief. And few of these vendors seem to allow you to walk away with the wrong product, while many invite you to taste before you buy.

Souk: Moroccan Carpets

by wrldtravler

Of course, the souks are renowned for their exquisite Moroccan carpets. Prices are reasonable, but this is the one product where there is a lot of mint tea drinking, wagging, wringing, head shaking, sighing and smiling to be done before a deal is truck to the satisfaction of both parties. In general, a good carpet will cost around 300-500dh ($30-$40) per square meter. Carpets.

Bargaining

by mariquita

Local crafts is the best thing Morocco has to offer. Pottery, wood and carpets are probably the best things. The atmosphere of the zooks is also enjoyable.Bargaining is customary. Do not be ashamed to start at least from half the price they ask for.

Bargaining-r-Us: Medina Shopping

by Venturingnow

Morocco is home to some fine craft work, most of which is available for you to purchase in one city or another. Some things to keep your eye on are the silver serving sets that come with a platter, cups, and a tea kettle, all hammered out and stamped by hand. I actually watched a local kid do this work out in some village in between Erfoud and Marrakech. He sat outside, heating and bending, tapping, and working this metal until it was a beatiful tea pot, it was amazing. You will also find numerous rugs and blankets (the intricate designs are made by women, men make the simple rugs) everywhere. They range from the "student rug" that I bought for about 6 euros (pictured) to hundreds of dollars for some high quality stuff. These are great things for family and hanging in your apartment, but they are hard to pack, you should send them home in the mail. Also look for hookas, those bong like...

Old Souks: Shopping In Morocco

by marimar_72

The Souk is the shopping place in Arabic,so each Arabian city would have to have a Souk, but in Morocco it`s diffrent because the things you would find there, you will never find any where else in the world,,the Moroccans are very good in most hand crafts specially carpets and porcelain. In Morocco they make nice old silver jewelry, also hand made carpets.Moroccos is also known for it`s good spices, don`t miss buying saffron. Try to bargain on every item you want to buy.Prices are never fixed there.
