Souks

by xaver

Souks are the local shops you mainly meet in medinas, I guess they are the best place to buy local products, just train your bargain skills before starting and stop only where you see something you are really interested in as, otherwise you could waste a lot of time discussing a price or watching many goods you are not interested in. Do not think to ask how much and go as those guys will not let you:)) start offering the half of what the seller asks.

Official Markets

by nygaston

the cheapest shops are in the small village. you will find lots of hand craft, china, good leather clothes and lugages , etc... look at prices in Official Markets and negociate for this maximum prices in the other markets.

Camelsacks: Camelbags

by globetrott

Carpets are found in many places, but these " Sacs à Camel " were rather rare, and did not have an own name, but I always had to explain it in French and finally I found the right thing. These Camelbags have a great front-side with patterns that are different for the different tribes (see the 1st pic )But this is the backside, just brown in different tones, as this is the part beeing turned towards the saddle of the camel, and nobiody will see the ornaments... depends on the size, but simply considder the amount of work for such a rare thing

dont remember - but there are plenty all over: KILIM-Camelbags

by globetrott

Carpet shops are found all over Maroc - but while you may bargain in other countries, and finally leave the shop without buying......THIS would be a big problem here in Maroc : Start to bargain ONLY if you are planning to really buy the carpet/Kilim Camel-bags were used by the nomades to transport their goods and their whole household, when moving from one place to another they are rather cheap1m x 0,80 m = ca. 40 € ( in 1990 )

Bazars in Fes

by globetrott

Try not to get lost in the labyrinth of small streets with plenty of exotic and tempting shops maybe you get yourself a " Chellabah " - maybe for the next carneval - or simply to try out the feeling Chellabahs might be rather expensive, when you look for good quality - so you better bargain...

Lady's underwear NOT sold to women...

by globetrott

Be aware of the fact, that you might come into a shop for Lady's underwear - and there will be ONLY MALE STAFF and they will simply NOT deal with women - you would need a man to order, what you want - - and while you may stand next to that man - - HE would have to ask for it and pay - - and whenever a lady askes someting, they will simply not understand....This will be better in modern towns of course - but it happened to an elderly lady on my bus - in a very small shop in Fes, outside of the tourist's path

Tip Photo
"exotic purchases"

by globetrott

Watch out for "unusual gifts" ;-)).if you click on the pic, you will see what I mean.....and you may see animal's heads like this often sold that way in Maroc - and of course it will NOT be refrigerated, lots of flys will be sitting on it...

Tip Photo
the Bazzars of Marakech

by globetrott

Go and have a look in the bazars - and even if not everything looks like the latest fashion for you - - maybe you buy some clothes for your next costume-ball at home... Some goods have a price-label sticked on it, underneath.......and I remember that I wanted to buy a small wooden box, and the merchant started to argue about the price with me.......and after we settled the price on his "very very LAST OFFER - and it was ONLY that cheap, because I was the FIRST customer of that day and it would bring luck, if the first business goes fine........"....and then I accidentally turned around the box and saw a price-label underneath, and it was just half of his very very last offer....Then the merchant sent me away, sceaming and shouting at me to leave his shop immediately...

Don't shop at night

by windcity

Don't shop at night, the light is bad and shop keepers off load their most badly made/marked goods. Morning is best, If yours is the first sale of the day you can bargain for a better price.
